death of her father, George W.
Cottrell of Luberne, Minn., fol
lowing a stroke. Mr. Cottrell
had visited in Medford numer
ous times with the Schuler fam
ily and has many friends here.
Dinner Success Sixty-five
soldiers and 12 junior hostesses
were entertained at Ashland
USO recently with the cook-your-own
dinner. Mrs. Charles
Haines, canteen chairman, has
been in charge of this USO ac
tivity for some time and copies
of soma her recipes have been
sent to the National USO center
in New York City.

Arrives From East Mrs.
Lawrence Patterson of Long
Pond, Newfoundland, arrived in
Medford yesterday for an ex
tended stay at the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Ed Patterson on Route
1. Mrs. Patterson is a daughter-in-law
of the Medford couple.
Her husband is In the navy and
is stationed on the Atlantic sea
coast Mrs. Patterson was 11
days in making the trip from
Newfoundland by train.
Transferred Master Sgt. W.
M. Daws and Mrs. Daws of 018
Queen Anne avenue hava moved
to San Bruno, Cal., to make
their home. Sgt. Daws has been
stationed here with the U. S.
army air corps for the past eight
years. The 302nd headquarters
spuadron has reported to Med
ford for duty replacing the
group which had been here for
some time and was transferred
to various points.
Promoted Mr. and Mrs.
Harry Prentice of 18 Newtown
street, have received word that
their son, Bill, has been promot
ed to captain with the quarter
master replacement center at
Fort Warren, Wyom., u. S.
army. Captain Prentice, who
was formerly with Copco at
Klamath Falls in the accounting
department, was called into ac
tive duty with reserve officers
in February, 1941. He com
pleted his R.O.T.C. training
through University of Oregon
by corresDondence. Mrs. rren
tice and child are residing in
Cheyenne, Wyom. Captain
Prentice Is a graduate of Med'
ford hiah school and was i
member of the state champion-
shin football team, later attend.

Classes Starting Two home
nursing classes are beginning
under the auspices of the Jac
son County chapter of American
Red Cross. One will start n
day at 1:30 r. m. at the home of
Mrs. Lawrence Crocker, Just
west of the Oak Grove school on
the Jacksonville highway. Mrs.
Augusta Padgham will be in
structor and all are welcome to
enroll. There will be someone
present to care for small chil
dren. Red Cross officials ex
plained the practicability of
the course as an aid to house
wives In caring for their fam
ilies during war times. This
class will meet Tuesday and Fri
day of each week until 30 hours
of Instruction has been given.
The second will begin Tues
day at 1:30 p. m. in the leisure
art room of Lincoln school with
Mrs. Verna Johnson as instruc

President Roosevelt's state of the
Union message had little influ
ence on markets' today. Stocks
fluctuated irregularly, bonds
moved higher under the lead of
rails and commodities advanced
with wheat at new five-year tops.
A new 1942-43 high for the
utility average and weakness in
movie shares featured the stock
list. Trading was slightly above
yesterday's slow pace. The mar
ket opened Irregular, slipped
down moderately prior to Mr.
Roosevelt's address and then cut
the losses slightly in later trad

a Japanese-English and English-
Japanese dictionary , and five
easy readers. The readers are
duplicates of ones used in the
U. S. embassy school at Tokyo
while the dictionaries include
words that will be of special use
to American soldiers and sailors
once, they arrive there.

C. A. Meeker, Medford's new
mayor, will leave tonight lor
Seattle where he will attend
regional meeting of federal
housing authorities. Mr. Meek
er is chairman of the Jackson
County Housing Authority and
will confer with the regional of
ficials regarding contracts and
other details of the 125-unit
housing project which the fed
eral government will construct
in Medford in the Immediate
future. The conference will con
tinue through Friday and Sat
urday. The mayor plans to return
south to Salem by Monday tor
the opening of the 1943 session
of the state legislature and will
meet with the legislative com
mittee of the League of Oregon
Cities of which he Is a director,

Mr. Meeker plans to institute an
innovation in city government,
He will establish a mayor's of
fice in the city hall and will
designate hours at which he will
be in the office or some repre
sentative will be in charge.

SHOWS ABRUPT DECLINE
Two new cases of gonorrhea
were reported for Jackson coun
ty in the week ending January
2, according to the report of
Frederick D. Strieker, state
health -officer. Seventeen new
cases were reported in Portland
and tha total for the state was
30 new rases. No new syphilis
cases were reported for this
county, but 15 were reported for
tha state, six being from Port
land. Theaa figures are consider
ably under those for the preced
ing week, when 04 new cases of
venereal disease were reported
to wis oiiicer.
