County Public Health associa
tion Wednesday In a meeting at
the home of the president, Mrs.
Elwood Hedberg. She is Mrs.
Ruth Morn, graduate of the Uni
verslty of California, who comet
highly recommended in the fields
of both public health nursing
1 and maternity work.
"Jackson county is very fortu
nate in obtaining the services
of so well trained a nurse at this
time," Mrs. J. C. S.Weills, for
mer president, told the board,
"and is quite the envy of the
state. There is a definite short
age of public health nurses In
Oregon." Jackson county's good
luck Is the result of establish'
ment here of Camp White. Mrs.
Horn s husband is stationed
the camp.
Report of the annual Christ
mas Seal Sale was given the
board by Mrs. Leonard Mayfleld
county chairman. She stated that
the association now has collect
ed $1982 and has not received
returns from Ashland and some
rural districts. The county must
obtain over (Z300 to retain 75
per cent of the money for work
here. Mrs. John S. Day, Med'
ford chairman, reported that ap
proximately 300 follow-up no
tices have been mailed those
persons who have failed to re
spond to the drive and that early
replies are anticipated.
' Mrs. Mayfleld gave special
recognition to the Medford un
lor high school for the sale of
329.89 worth of stamps. The to
tal set an all-time record for
this particular school.

berg presided at the meeting
rushing the business session

to enable several members to re
turn to work on schedule.

said an oil shipment was expect

would not be enough to keep the
800 workers busy for more than
a few hours and that the plant
would have to close again.

ductive effort in 1942, the presi
dent said the results Justified
the confidence In the ability of
the American people to estab
lish new records.
Explaining the goals he origin
ally set for 1942 were altered
some upward, others downward
he cited these 1942 figures
"About 48,000 military planes
during the year more than the
airplane production of Germany,
Italy and Japan put together,
50,000 combat vehicles, in-t
eluding tanks and self-propelled
artillery.
870,000 machine funs and 21-
000 anti-tank guns.
10,230,000,000 rounds of small
ammunition and 181,000,000
rounds of artillery ammunition.
Critics Disproved
"He cited the production rec
ord as disproving certain mis
conceptions "especially the one
that holds that the various blocs
or groups within a free country
cannot forego their political and
economic differences In time of
crisis and work together toward
a common goal."
Emphasizing the need for
proper "sense of proportion" in
viewing the war and its needs,
Mr. Roosevelt said, "we should
never forget the things wa are
fighting for."
"But," he added, "at this criti
cal period of the war, we should
confine ourselves to the larger
objectives and not get bogged
down in argument over methods
and details."
From the days of the first
world war to the beginning of
the present war. he said, "we
were not living under a decent
or a durable peace."
Things must be d liferent this
time, he said. The men of the
armed forces "want a lasting
peace, and, equally, they want
permanent employment for
themselves, their families and
their neighbors when they are
mustered out at the end of the
war, he added.
Willing to Risk
"They expect the opportunity
to work, to run their farms,
their stores, to earn decent
wages," he said. "They are eager
to lace the risks Inherent In
our system of free -enterprise."
Mr. Roosevelt said he honed
the problem of granting "the
right of employment and the
right of assurance against life's
hazards" would not be regarded
an Issue but rather as a
task" for all to approach "sym
pathetically" and achieve "with
fairness to all and with Injus
tice to none."
The president said that "this
great government can and must :
provide" assurance desired by '
our young men and women
'against the evils of all major.
