The navy department has re
ported 23,254 casualties exclud

reported by the provost marshal.

ians to date, the provost mar
shal's office said. Of this total
2,648 are held by the Japanese,

In Dancing Role

WUllam L. Hathaway. 53,
nursery operator, died Dee. 19,
1942, in an Exeter, Cel., hospital,
after week's illness, it was
learned here today.
Mr. Hathaway waa born at
Kerby, Ore., In 1887, and resld
ed there until 8 years old. With
his parents and two brothers he
moved to Central Point, Ore.
where he grew to manhood and
received his education in the
Central Point schools.
In 1917 he, with his brother
Jay, went to Visalla, Cal., where
they bought a farm. After four
years they entered the nursery
business, specializing in orna
mental shrubs and flowers.
Mr, Hathaway was a man of
fine character and leaves a host
of friends to mourn his passing.
The last two years he helped
care for his Invalid father, who
preceded him in death Just seven
weeks.
He leaves to mourn his loss,
two brothers, Ernest Hathaway
of San Jose, Cal., and Jay C.
nainaway, oi visaiia, Lai., and
one sister, Mrs. Clara Wortman,
of Willows, Cal.
He was laid to rest beside his
parents in the cemetery at Visa-,
iia, tai- oec zi.
