sion, Jones revealed.
"Mr. Wright has been figur
ing on retiring Whlrlaway for
some time," Jones said.
The five-year-old chestnut has
been assigned top weight of 132
pounds for the March 6 running
of the $25,000 Widener cup at
Hlaleah parK.
Whlrlaway, winner of S560,-
91 1 for an all-time record, will
be shooting at f 130,000 this
year before closing the books on
his lifetime earnings. Several
weeks ago it was reported he
might shoot for the mllllon-dol

ball hungry" when the 1943 sea
son opens. President W. C.
Tuttle of the Pacific Coast
league today said coast club
owners have already put the
approaching season through the
war wringer.
Major curtailment, agreed
upon at an informal but secret
meeting held coincident with the
recent Major league conclave
at Chicago, was shortening of
the 1943 playing season by at
least three weeks.
Club owner, he disclosed,
agreed to open the 1943 cam
paign April 20, three week
later than last year.
Dates Not Fixed
Closing date and number'of
game remain to be ironed out

out the delay in opening would
mean a schedule of 134 games,
compared with last year's 178,
even If no more are pared from
the season.

War Rolls Money "Strike"
For Nation's Bowling Alleys

(or bowling, providing the crashing pins game with 17,000,000
participants who spent approximately 1,828,000,000 during the
past season.
These totals for 1942 repre-
sent an Increase of about 33 per
cent in all departments over
1941. according to Al Clrillo.

Serious Business
"Never In the history of the
game have bowlers taken the
sport so seriously," he said.

the American Bowling Congress

tion, the craze has continued on
all fronts."
With 600.000 bowlers In the
armed services, one would ex
oect that the game would be
hurt to a certain extent, but
that's not so, according to Ciril
lo, who emphasizes that the
stream of dollars pouring Into
the pocket of war workers
men and women means more
games rolled throughout the
country, at all hours ot the day
or night. The big contribution
Is being made by women defense-
worker, who have provided
about 4,000.000 new ' bowlers
since Pearl Harbor.

Meanwhile service men on

the cities and towns. At some
of these municipal alleys, the
owners arrange for uniformed
men to roll free,
reaming that
they will more than pay their
way by bringing In civilians to
Bowl with them.
Editor Cirillo says that the
bowling year Is restricted to
about 230 days, eliminating the
hot period from mid-June to
mid-September. During the sea
son, he claims, the average bowl
er spend approximately $1.30 a
week not Including refresh
ments. Concerning priorities for bowl
ing equipment, Cirillo explains
mat virtually none of the regular
bowling balls with their two

ufactured any more, although
most dealers have them on hand

No more pin-setting machines
are being manufactured because
of priorities, and the accent Is
on human pln-stlckers. But there
Is a shortage here, too, because
so many of the young alley-hop
per have joined the service.
There Is a movement afoot now
to bring in girl pin-setters, but
they must be husky to stand the
work.
