CHAPTER ZXVTH
THAT startling Invitation

was more angry than appre
hensive. She kept feeling that
It was all Carey's fault, and had

Iris had mentioned a ten-day
trip, and on the day before they
figured Irl was due home. Lorl
could hold In no longer. Carey was
so low and preoccupied that he was

told Iris Wrenshaw the truth at the

"Nonsense I snapped Carey
"She's not that snobbish. And be

she sees who the talented perform

won't stretch that far."

It took a southern Oregon
girl to turn the trick. Flora
Miller of Ashland, who has com
pleted her basic training In the
WAAC's and is now doing reo
reatlon work for the women's
army, married Terrance Rosen,
a Drake university student, who
refused to register for selective
service. Now he is expecting to
be called for duty in the U. 8.
army in 1843 and Is "liking if
Last summer Rosen refused to
register for selective service "as
a protest against war and the
conscription act and not to defy
the law or set myself above
the government of the United
States." A drama student, he
recently appeared in a war play
and the WAAC, who want to
be a playwright when the war's
over, wrote Rosen a letter of
commendation for his work In
It. He answered and romance
flourished.
Now Rosen says "I want to
do anything I can to help, par
ticularly to help the boys out
there." He Is a former student

Carey and Lorls had to force
their smiles at the roadhouse that
night. As for Carey, he hardly
made an effort. What did he care
about the people who came to The
Boulevard! What difference did It
make what they thought about
him?
Somehow they got through the
two performances and were mildly
amazed to realise that the ap
plause seemed as generous as usual
But the long evening was a terrific
strain.
"My face fairly aches from try
ing to smile." said Lorls as they
finally drove home.
. "Mine, too," said Carey.

picked on me so much before we

lowed Carey to the door of the liv
ing room.
"All seems quiet on the Potters,
place front," Carey went on face

Carey found the twitch and
flooded the big room with light
"Oood heavens " he cried, point
ing near the fireplace.
Lorts looked and gasped.

One of the effective new smoke
weapons is the 4.2 mortar, which

tion in two minutes, a murmr
can fire 20 rounds a minute.
Simple Weapon
The shell is dropped into the
top of the barrel and the pro
pulsion charge explodes when it
hits the bottom. Moreover, the
explosion expands a ring of
brass which grips the riflings of
the mortar, giving the weapon
exceptional accuracy. Two jeeps
are sufficient ,to transport a
mortar, ammunition and gun
crew.
Col. Eugene Gempel, director
of training at Edgewood, dem
onstrated how the shells would
burst on water. Clouds of steam
like smoke spread out over a
wide area, suggesting the prac
tical use of such weapons in am
phibious landings such as Allied
forces will likely employ repeat
edly before the Axis is beaten.
One type of shell contains or
dinary phosphorus, which has an
incendiary effect when it bursts.

Smokes may also be dropped
in bombs from airplanes and
sprayed from low moving planes
to blind the enemy or cover
friendly operations.
Parallel with the employment
of smokes, the chemical warfare
service has developed a whole
range of incediarles, including
magnesium, thermite oil and
phosphorus bombs.
Importance of the Incendiary
Is revealed by the fact that the
average British bomb load car
ried over Europe has been 65
per cent Incendiary.
Employment of smokes de
fensively is likewise being de
veloped. A new and highly ef
fective device for making smoke
mechanically has been manufac
tured for hiding defenses, strate
gic industries and communica
tions. A few such machines oper
ating to windward could blan
ket a whole city with fog in a
few minutes. i
