Cast Film Portrays Jim
Corbett's Life.
The dayi of the buttle, the
stiff collar, striped silk shirts,
bowler hats and James J. Cor
bett, first heavyweight cham
pion of the world under the
Marquis of Queensberry rules,
are recreated In the current Cra
terian Theatre attraction, "Gen
tleman Jim."
"Gentleman Jim" tells the
story of Corbett's life. Highlight
ing the film is a reenactment of
the now classic John L. Sullivan
Corbett fight in New Orleans on
September 7, 1892.
Co-starring Errol Flynn and
Alexis Smith, the picture in
cludes Jack Carson, Alan Hale,
John Loder, William Frawley,
Minor Watson and Ward Bond as
John L. in its supporting cast.
The Strand film starts with
Corbett a San Francisco bank
clerk. Winning an exhibition
bout, Corbett begins his profes
sional career. After spectacular
wins over such leading men of
the period as Joe Choynski and
Jake Kilraln, Corbett meets the
mighty John L. and gains the
heavyweight crown.

'Mug Town', Laugh
Hit on Holly Bill
The Holly Theatre opens to
day with two of the New Year's
brightest comedies. The first is
"Mug Town", starring those be
loved rascals of the Bronx gut
ters. The "Dead End" Kids.
This new epic finds the hilar
ious gang caught in the draft.
How and when they are drafted
is said to form, one of their very
best comedies and the outcome
will surely be one of the fun
treats of a lifetime.
Billy Halop, Huntz Hall,
Gabriel Dell, Bernard Punsley
and the other 'Dead Enders" are
all in the picture. Grace Mc
Donald, a new-comer, has been
added to the cast.
'The Man In the Trunk", a
chlller-diller from the word
"go", plays as the companion
mystery with "Mug Town".
Lynn Roberts, J. Carrol Naish,
Raymond Walburn and George
Holmes have starring roles in
this unique murder mystery.
Both features will show at the
Holly Theatre for three days.

Three heavy Allied air raids
within five days on the impor
tant Japanese base at Rabaul,
New Britain island, today indi
cated the possibility the enemy
might be planning another ma
jor offensive against American
and Australian forces on New
Guinea.
The renewed air attacks upon
Rabaul, 480 air miles northeast
of Port Moresby, were consid
ered significant because previous
heavy raids have always oc
curred during periods of con
centration of Japanese shipping
or when harbor activity indicat
ed that the enemy was getting
ready for some offensive movement
The Japanese might consider
this a proprltious time for re
inforcing their beleaguered
troops on New Guinea'. Heavy
rains that have soaked the north
coast for several days, are ham'
pering both land and air action.

President Roosevelt has endorsed
the appeal of the Federal Coun
cil of Churches to the American
people to observe this week as
a universal week of prayer, Dr.
Samuel McCrea Cavert, general
secretary of the inter-church
body, said today.
The general theme to be em
phasized throughout the week
is "Faith Giveth the Victory."
The president's message as re
leased by the council:
'The observance of a week of
universal prayer, to be carried
out under the auspices of the
Federal Council of Churches,
will, I hope, remind us of the
need for constant rededication
throughout the long ordeal that
is ahead of us. For without spir
itual armor we cannot hope to
win this war. Without spiritual
armor we cannot be worthy of
the victory our men are purchas
ing at a great cost on the battle
field, without spiritual armor
we cannot hope to play an hon
orable and responsible part in
the establishment of world
peace."

An order Increasing the work
ing week of the Crater Lake Na
tional Park staff from 44 to 48
hours was received yesterday
morning by E. P. Leavitt, super
intendent. The order was re
ceived by wire from park head
quarters this morning and was
to take effect immediately.
A similar order was received
last week by the staff of the
Rogue River National Forest, go
ing into effect last Saturday.
Both offices will now remain
open all day on Saturday, In
stead of closing at noon.
It is thought by other local
employees of federal, or federal
ly supervised institutions, that
similar orders will be put into
effect in the near future.

whether they were Implicated

phy, President Roosevelt's rep
resentative. Giraud said In a press confer
ence Dec. 30 that he had ordered
the arrests only after he was
certain the men had participated
in the Darlan plot or were plot
ting against Murphy and himself.
