San FrancUco, December 30: Wa cant truthfully say we
left Medford on doctor's orders. But our departure was the result
of definite medical advice. Having had one flu session, and sus
pecting another, It was regarded as a very pious Idea to get out
while the getting was good and the circumambient atmosphere
WASN'T. So we departed on the 7:45 bus and were delighted to
find no rain or log the other side of the Siskiyous. Not a great
deal of sun either, but some, and the further south the bus bumped
the better It looked. The point we wish to make Is our mental
outlook was perfect, and our morale the same. Yet here we are
n Icy San Francisco and the very bug we set out to avoid is now
doing a sort of gum-shoe Up dance In the editorial proboscis!
So we are wondering If anyone KNOWS anything about ANY
thing in this mad worldl Wa seriously doubt HI We have about
decided Mr. Shakespeare was right when he said there are certain
ebbs and flows In the everlasting tides of life and "we the people
are Just chips riding along on them, pulling the oars like mad in
our silly conceit, but going where certain elemental forces, not
our efforts or our wills and most certainly not our desires
determine Or does it merely add up to what Robert Burns said
about the best laid plans of mice and men. Well, whatever the
answer the result la n. g. plus.

We took the bus because we felt it couldn't be as bad as the
S P. and it wasn't Which doesn't mean It was good either In
fact It was pretty terrible. But something the S. P. has never
dona was accomplished. The time table called for our arrival In
San Francisco at 12:20 a. m. that night (or morning If you must
be meticulous) and wa did arrive exactly an hour earlier. And
after sitting next to a fat man who sneezed every two minutes
without shame or aid of a hanky, that hour was precious!
In fact until that nasal tap-danca started wa were ready to
glva the Greyhound a free "plug" that would have undoubtedly
been framed and hung In the president's office, but under the cli
cumstances wa feel disposed to restrain our enthusiasm somewhat.
At Redding we changed busses, our new equipage being a museum
piece, last used when General Joffre commandeered all the motor
busses of Paris and drove back von Kluck. (For the benefit of
younger readers who have not kept up on their history, that was
.n the fall of 1914 or thereabouts.) And this red-faced fat boy,
with no shirt and his coat collar turned up (yes he took his over
coat off to put on a turtle neck sweater when we reached Corning)
plumped down in the aisle portion of our twin-seat, flowing over
on each side like a bucket of bread-dough with too much yeast,
and started without any preliminaries to cough and sneeze until
we reached Vallejol
Yes that performance did put a fly or two In our ointment
of Greyhound gratitude, even though at the aforesaid Vallejo they
transferred all the S. F. passengers Into a special Jitney and
rushed them, via Richmond and the Bay Bridge, to the city ter
minal In nothing or almost nothing flatl (Soma driver that
out and In and In and out, showing his heels to everything eating
gas bet Rommel would like to borrow him for his next "STANDI"
En passant wa realize that If the accepted ttma of incubation
Is correct, then this corpulent and costless incubator of germs, had
nothing to do with the editorial status quo, whatever but who
knows anything about the incubation time of colds or anything
about colds at all!
The driver of the Joffre bus on the other hand wasn't so hot
which may explain why such a young, husky and handsome
Appolo has thus far escaped the draft.
Ha not only had a terrific time shifting gears on the old war
scarred trap but he never knew where the bus stations were along
tha route. Twice he stopped at service stations, opened the front
door not easy to do either, with the complicated mecitajilsm all
rusted up and announced Orland, Williams, etc., etc., etc., and
whereupon a large proportion of the passenger list who presum
ably were Callfornlans, including the fat fellow traveller, yelled
in unison and In protest. The back of the young man's neck crim
soned at each mistake but he never looked around, tried to ex
plain or apologize Just drove on where the loudest voice sug
gested, and we don't believe wasted more than a half hour or so
In this sort of station searching from Redding to Vallejo.

In fact we came to admire the young man's spunk and self
control. So did a coupla of girls both dressed in scarlet sweaters
and dark blue slacks who hopped on the bus at Willows and took
ya editor's front seat, within easy reach of the above mentioned
Appolo, while ya editor was trying to snatch a bite to eat. Ac
cording to a sign on the dining room wall Tuesday was meatless
day which every patriotic hotel and American would observe
religiously and for a moment we had visions of a vegetable plate
until we discovered that hot chicken, turkey and fish are not
meat. The turkey sandwich proved very delectable in fact and
while on the trivial subject of food, the luncheon at tha Weed
Hotel in Weed was very good indeed, something so close to
the railroad track we have hitherto seldom met.
Yes, the two gals, on a Jaunt to San Francisco and very ob
viously with no chaperone (WHAT is a chaperone anyway, grand
puppy!) would have thrown themselves around the neck of the
apprentice driver, if he had given them a chance but he had
some sense if they didn't and quite enough on his mind without
any such divertlsements. The babies smoked a package of cig
arettes between them before they met up with some boy friends
at Vallejo, and the purpose of the Jaunt became reasonably evi
dent 6peaklng of Vallejo, that portion of the coast from the bridge
to San Francisco, is simply amazing, the train misses most of it
of course, but the bus goes through the heart of It. Talk about
your mushroom and trailer cities here la a second Detroit spread
out from Mare Island to the Golden Gate that alone Is worth the
trip!
Our fellow passenger from Medford to Dunsmutr was a pretty
Grants Pass war bride going to
army camp near Indianapolis, Indiana. She had never been furthor
south of Grants Pass than Weed though she was born In Saskatche
wan, Canada, and naturally took a considerable Interest In the
trip, the ticket and making the proper connections for Sacramento
and the Challenger east. (She also was attired In bright scarlet
sweater and blue slacks, apparently very popular this season.)
At least her destination was supposed to be Dunsmulr but on
arrival it was discovered the hoped for S. P. train was seven hours
late! So there was only one thing to do: stay on the bus and try
to catch the eastern train at Rosevllle or Sacramento. This only
allowed an hour Instead of five hours to wait and as we left
Medford half an hour behind schedule and made little up the
young lady was naturally somewhat anxious. What she said about
the S. P. was not at all complimentary but as a matter of fact this
time Rosey has a REAL alibi the

to remember that coughing in
itself is not only not injurious
but generally beneficial, and

turies, according to Prof. Stuart
A. Northrop of the University of
New Mexico.
Northrup, head of the univer
sity's department of geology,
said the ants, which work down
through the volcanic soil of the
region, sometimes bring up

Fulmer said that at his direc
