cept for one difficulty, Florida
agricultural department officials
pointed out.
That difficulty lies In the In
ability to data to devise a prac
tical machine for mass-shreddlng
of boenmeria nivea fibers.
Boehmerla nivea, commonly
known as ramie, was used for
cloth-making in ancient China.
It has been grown In Florida
and several southern states for
a number of years.
Commissioner of Agriculture
Nathan Mayo predicted that
when ramie can be shred, many
scientific discoveries would be
the natural outcome and Amer
ican industry would greatly
benefit.
Because ramie has greater
tensile strength than any known
fiber and because its elasticity
and torsion qualities are . sur
passed only by raw silk, textile
experts foresee an interesting
future for the unimposlng nettle
plant which produces it.

in length. The average Is six
to eight Inches longer than any
fiber utilized In textile or cord
age mills.
DuPont chemical Interests and
private Investors have spent
over a half-million dollars try
ing to exploit ramie. Their ef
forts to date have been In vain.
But with war-born shortages
pushing scientists to new and
ever greater goals, the answer
msv not be far away.
Commissioner Mayo said that
two machines now ready for
testing give promise of solving
the ramie bottle-neck.
Besides Its uses In fabrics,
ramie furnishes high-quality col
lulose which can be used in
making paper. Ramie fiber
could be used in autc tire cas
ings, for belting and other prod
ucta which perform heavy-duty
work.
On clothing authority has
commented that a suit made of
ramie would outlast two gener
ations of wearers from father
to son and perhaps to grandson.
Crop la Everglades
in ' Florida ramie Is being
grown at the Belgrade state
experiment station. An experi
mental crop has been planted
in tne Everglades. Since the
weed-like plant grows well in
rich, mucky soli, this experi
ment should prove fruitful.

from two to four crops a year
for a period of 10 years or

William P. Turner, driver of a
fuel oil truck, started to attach
the oil hose to a pipe outside a
store when a man ran out and
said: "That Isn't the pipe; it's
over to your left.
So Turner hooked up with the
pipe to his left, and 817 gallons
of rationed oil ran into the store
basement, not the tank. It was
a pipe no longer in use. Firemen
pumped out the oil; Turner col
lected his. ration coupons and
left.
GRAND JURY TO RESUME
STATE HOSPITAL STUDY
Salem, Ore., Dec. 25 (U.R)
The Marlon county grand Jury
will resume its study of the state
hospital poisonings when It re
convenes next week. District At
torney Miller B. Hadyen said
today.
First evidence connected with
the case was presented to the
Jury this week by Caot. Walter
Lansing of the state police. Dr.
John C. Evais, stats hospital
superintendent, is expected to be
called to testify next week, and
the Jury is expected to make an
inspection tour of the hospital
itself. -
