Bethlehem Bells Ring Out

Bethlehem, Dec. 24 (U.R) The bells of Bethlehem pealed
their Christmas message of eternal hop tonight across a land
stern with the trappings of war.
American soldiers on leave,
mingled with Pilgrims seeking
admission to the Church of the
Nativity, traditional site of
Jesus Christ's birthplace and
the most sacred shrine of Chris
tianity.
The bells of Bethlehem rang
out over blacked-out villages
and prison camps . filled with
Italians. In accordance with
Christian tradition, priests said
special masses for th Italians
in the camps.
The YMCA held lis annual
campfire observance in the
Shepherd's Field near ueinie
hem this afternoon. Because of
blackout restrictions, th tradi
tional night-watch sponsored by
the YMCA has no, been held
since 1929.
The mayor of Bethlehem,
Hanna Effendi Kawas, Issued his
annual Christmas message to the
world, reminding that "the uos
nel of peace was preached by
the son of man in this little
shepherd city of Bethlehem."

and its great importance now,
a group of interested girls gath
ered in the school auditorium
Monday. Among other things,
the girls had explained to them
nurses' service ratings and found
out that a registered nurse auto
matically becomes a lieutenant
upon enlisting and may advance
as high as a lieutenant colonel.

sary for a girl wishing to be
come an army nurse, wer out
lined. Those attending wer
given a special invitation to go

A musical program in observ
ance of Christmas was presented
Wednesday morning in the audi
torium by members of the
chorus and choir under direction
of Miss Joanne Riesch, vocal in
structor. The choir, robed In
traditional black and white
gowns, presented lta group of
songs from the stage which was
flanked .by mammoth candles.
The chorus sang from the bal
cony. Solo parts wer presented
by June Williams, a sophomore
student.

Webb, was held last Monday by

ary. Betta Rosa was in general
charge of the program, which
was definitely Mexican In theme.

tents. Wartime Christmas was the
theme of the alumni dance held
Wednesday evening in the girls'
gym after the alumni-varsity

Wartime living, as it's now lived,
is going to result in fewer
babies too few, Dr. Constantine
Panunzlo, University of Califor
nia at Los Angeles sociologist,
warned today.
"Our situation Is serious," Pa
nunzlo declared, because of two
major factors:
(1) So many of the armed
forces stationed far away from
home.
(2) So many women employed
In war Industries.
Unless something la don now
about the nation's slowing birth
rate, th educator said, Japan's
population probably will increase
twice as much as the United
States' during th next genera
tion. Panunzlo urged:
(1) That the government take
into consideration the present
birth decline in preparing con
scription orders for men between
22 and 38 and particularly mar
nea men between 22 and 26.
(2) That the government pro
vide "generous" family allow
ances for men who marry after
enlistment and "similar" allow
ances for each child.
These, he said, would help to

as the war front.

week in war industries during
October wss approximately 48
nours, secretary or Labor Fran
ces Perkins reported today.
Because of labor turnover,
the actual week worked was
slightly shorter, averaging 4S.7
hours in all durable goods In
dustries compared with 44.6
hours in September and 49.2
hours In August.
