turned on all the gas burners,

Erskine Caldwell, author of

secret honeymoon today with his-
bride of a day, the former Miss
June Johnson of Phoenix.

collar workers are "teamlng-up
on Cleveland's crucial man
power problem today In a man
ner that may prove the most
successful solution, to that bug
bear of war plant employers. .
'Teaming-up on the man
power situation by white-collar
workers is simply a matter of
putting four and four together
and making eight nours.
Two men. whose regular work
consists of teaching school,
newspapering, being a salesman
or even driving a truck, form a
partnership and take a joint Job
in a war plant. Each man works
half an eight-hour shift.
The Warner and Swasey Co,
in Cleveland probably has
carried the experiment farther
than any other war plant in the
nation.
Began with Six Teams
Faced with an ever-increasing
loss of employes to the armed
forces, Charles J. Stillwell, presi
dent of the company, picked up
the idea on a trip east. An offi
cial of a Hartford, Conn., plant
told him they were considering
the "half-shift" method in an ef
fort to balance the tide of de
parting workers and new em
ployes. On his return to Cleve
land Stillwell put the plan into
operation on an experimental
basis.
Six "teams" were gotten to
gether and commenced training,
at the company's expense, prior
to taking their places on the as
sembly line.
At the end of six weeks time,
the Initial group had proven so
successful that the company is
now going ahead full-speed In
search of additional teams.
More than 30 additional teams
are now in the process of begin
ning actual work. The company's
employment manager said that
applications for such jobs were
coming in faster each day. - -Work
at Nights
So far, the men are all work
ing at nights, on the four-to-12
shift. The man coming to work
at four is replaced by his
"buddy" at eight, and he works
until 12.
"All we ask," the company
employment manager said, "is
for the men to guarantee us a

That means, in case Paul Jones
is sick and can't come to work
for a couple of nights, his
"buddy," John - Smith, must
agree to work full shifts until
Jones can return.
The men aren't considered
special employes. Upon being
employed, they must pass the
same physical examinations as

ployes and, of course, are eligible
for overtime work and pay.
Must Get O.K.
The company requires only
one additional qualification of
its "half-timers." They must
have permission of their regular
employers before they can be
hired. To date, no employer has
given a refusal.
"Fact of the matter," said a W.
and S. official, "they all seem to
be very much In favor of it."' .
What the future possibilities
are can be seen In a statement
of B. C. Selple, manager of the
United States Employment Serv
ice in Cleveland.
He said, "I believe we could
easily fill 10,000 full-time jobs
with these half-time workers."
That will be 20,000 workers.
Here's a sample list of what
sort of jobs the "short-shifters"
do besides their war plant work.
Warner and Swasey now has
a Western Reserve University
English professor, several high
school and junior high school
teachers, the president of a coal
company (who Is teamed up
with an employe of his own
firm), a desk man from a Cleve
land newspaper, a food sales
man, two electrical products
salesmen, a cartoonist, an execu
tive of a loan company and an
attorney.

East's Cold Wave

Chinese communique, quoting
intelligence reports, said today
that premier Gen. Chang Chin
Hui of the Manchuko puppet
government had poisoned his
family, hastened to his office
and shot the Japanese adviser

ficials, and then shot himself.
The reports stated that he had
been "unable to stand Japanese
oppression." -

has been seriously wounded in
action in the Southwest Pacific
area, the war department an
nounced today. Waldron's home
is in Rockville Center, N. Y

new medical science of, geriat
rics, answering the wartime call
for older workers, has set out
to stretch the prime of man s
life into the 60 and 70 year old
age brackets, a study by the
Northwestern National Life In
surance Co. reveals.

aging process, the report says.

son why the average man or
woman cannot be vigorous.

The study finds that of ap
proximately 18,000,000 Ameri
can men 45 or older, 14,000,000
are now at work. But of the re
maining 4,000,000, three men
out of four are unfit to work
because of 111 health or other
disability, and many of the 14,
000,000 can give only limited
service.
No Cain In Health After SO
The report shows that while
millions more Americana now
live to the age of 85 and be
yond, there has been little Im
provement ' in their general
health after 50. The average
life span is longer because of
medical achievements in com
batting the diseases of infancy
and youth, consequently there
has been a steady increase in
the number of helpless, dis
abled oldsters In the United
States.
Diet fads and psychology are
two Important contributory
causes to premature aging, the
study says. Many men, reaching
the age of 60 or 65, take it for
granted they are "washed up,"
and the . life Insurance firm's
study shows that this attitude it
self brings on a rapid decline.
The report suggests, also, that
if a normal, appetizing diet dis
agrees with the older person,
he needs a doctor, not some
freakish diet suggested by well
meaning friends.
Medical research in preven
tive geriatrics is now underway
to develop a program of special
health education for persons be
tween 40 and 60, the report
says, so they will take proper
care of themselves during that
vital period of preparation for
normal, healthy aging.
4S-or-Over Group Rises
Indicated for the near future,
the study shows. Is the develop
ment of special vocational edu
cation for the aged, so they can
take advantage of their chang
ing powers and retain their in
dependence. The report says the Import
ance of geriatrics is revealed in
tha fact that In 1900, persons
45 years old or over in the
United States comprised slightly
over one-sixth of our entire pop
ulation, while In 1940 this age
group had expanded to Include
more than one-fourth of the
total population.
Between 1930 and 1840, the
report says, U. S. population 65
or over rose from (,600,000 to
nearly 0,000,000, an increase of
35 per cent, while tha general
population was Increasing only
seven per cent
So with Industries demanding
more and more workers, tha
report concludes, tha medical
science of geriatrics may be able
to do for older people what tha
science of pedriatics did for
youth.
