at the gym tonight when It
faces the Weed, (Calif.) Cougar
in the Inaugural contest of a

the 91st Infantry Division's Gun
ners and the USO Bombers open
the newly-formed four-team Ice
hockey league at the Medford
Ice Arena Saturday night at 7:45
sharp.
National Hockey league rules
will govern all play with two
exceptions; namely, the teams
will play three 15-minute per
iods plus time outs and a five
minute "sudden death" overtime
period will be played when the
games end in deadlocks.
The USO Bombers, the only
club in the circuit with civilian
skaters on Its roster, will take
the Ice with a forward line com
posed of Center Mark Marquess,
the sensational Ashland high
school flash who played last
year; Left Wing Gordon Wager,
another civilian who performed
in last season s loop, and Pvt.
Tommy Brogan, right wing, a
former member of the Chicago
Hornets, an amateur sextette.

Ice arena and a former profes
sional luminary, and Pvt. Bob
MacLauchlan of Toronto, Can.,
will play defense for the Bomb

athletic coach of Medford junior
high school, will return to his
former position on January 1 to
succeed Norman Worthley, who
leaves December 30 for Norfolk,
Va., to start training as a chief
petty officer In the U. S. navy's
physical education program.
E. H. Hedrick, city school
superintendent, announced yes
terday that he had recommended
Harrington for the post to the
school board. Hie election is
expected to be only a formality.
The new Bulldog mentor, a
Medford high and Linfield col
lege graduate, resigned as Junior
high coach In the spring of 1939
to enter the pear industry, and
has recently been employed at
the Medford Ice and Storage
company.
Harrington was succeeded by
Riney Cook, who In turn gave
way to Worthley In November,

Carl Epling. head of the Botany
department of the University of
California, has issued a warning
against anyone trying to solve
the coffee shortage by growing
his own coffee plants. Even the
most favorable climates of the
United States just will not pro
duce coffee, he said. Coffee
plants may be grown for orna
mental purposes, he added, but
they just won't produce any
beans.
