The first draft registration for,
18-year-olds was held recently
and to Donald Milton Bowers
of 24 Mistletoe street went the
honor of being the number one
Medford boy to sign up for pos
sible Induction into your Uncle
Samuel's armed forces. Bowers,
who is 18, is a student aad at
present is assistant manager of
the shoe department of the J.
C. Penney company.
Board number two, embrac
ing the territory outside Med
ford, reported that Donald Eu
gene Wolff of Route 1, Box 935,
Central Point, was the first to
register. At present he is help
ing his father on their farm.
So, congratulations to the two
Donalds, for being first in reg
istering for selective service,
First, that is, for the 18-year-
olds In this area.
Along the sports front the most
newsworthy item of the past
week was the announcement that
Norman Worthley, popular and
capable athletic coach of Junior
high school, had enlisted in the
U. S. navy's physical education
program headed by Gene Tun-
ney, former world's heavyweight
boxing champ.
Worthley, who also Is a grand
baseball player, received a chief
petty officer s rating. He 11 leave
here Dec. 30 to report to Nor
folk, Va Jan. 13, for his six
weeks training course. After
that well, his fate is in the
hands of the navy department.
He will be succeeded by
George Harrington, who used to
coach at Junior high before re
signing to take a position in the
local fruit industry.
A four-team hockey league has
been organized, with players
drawn from the thousands of sol
diers stationed at Camp White,
and the schedule will open to
morrow night in the fine Med
ford Ice Arena with the 91st In
fantry Division's Artillery Gun
ners facing the USO Bombers.
Basketball will make its 1942
43 debut here tonight when
Medford high plays Weed (Cal.)
high. The Tigers are looking
very good and are expected to
measure .the Invading California
ans. although little Is known re
garding the strength of the lat
ter outfit.
Instead of the usual two-week
Christmas holiday, Medford stu
dents will enjoy only four days'
respite from studies this year.
School will be dismissed the aft
ernoon of Dec. 23 and take up
again Dec. 28. The reason for
the shortened vacation period Is
that school opened at a late date
in the fall so students could aid
in the fruit harvest.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Flynn aren't
very happy these days, for some
body poisoned their dog, Toby,
blue-ribbon English bull who
never bothered anyone. Almost
10 years oM, Toby had been
with the Flynns for the past six
years. Tom has offered $100 re
ward for arrest and conviction of
the poisoner, and it is sincerely
noped events lead to the payment
of that reward.
War has temporarily halted
the political career of Frank J
VanDyke of Ashland. Elected to
the Oregon house of representa
tives In the last election, Frank
will be unable to serve during
the coming session because he is
attending Officer's Candidate
School at Camp Roberts, Cal.
The county court will appoint
somebody to serve In his place,

forces. Stephen A. Nye, Medford
fruit grower, has been promot
ed from captain to major. He Is
stationed at the New Orleans
(La.) Port of Embarkation, mo
tor transport division.
Also upped In rank recently
was MaJ. Nye's brother-in-law.
Lowell I. Dew, now a lieutenant
commander In the U. S. naval air
forces. Lt. Cmdr. Dew, a 1929
graduate of Medford high and
later of the U. S. Naval acad
emy at Annapolis, is stationed
at Trinidad, British West Indies. I
Promoted from corporal to
sergeant was Gene W. Tedrtck
of Route 4. He la stationed at
Camp Forrest, Term., with Hq.
Co. 3rd Bn., 319th infantry.

pital In Seattle, Wash.

Spending furloughs here the
past week were Thomas Kear
ney, boatswain's mate, stationed
at Keyport, Wash.; Sgt. Keith R.
Shull, who is en route to Baton
Rouge, La., from Alaska, with a
fighter squadron, and Pfc. Aug
ust Singler, in the army signal
corps at Camp Crowder.
