West African coast last Septem
ber, killing an esimated 1,500
Italian war prisoners and BOO
other persons tor possibly the
greatest torpedo death toll In
marina history, survivors saio
today.
The ihlo was returning to
Britain from Egypt when it was
attacked by an Italian and five
German submarines, whose com
manders apparently knew that
the prisoners were aboard.
One German captain told a
survivor:
"If you had half of the Italian
nation on her, we would have
till fired."
1,040 Rescued
About 1,040 persons were res
cued from lifeboats by French
cruiser and taken to Casablanca,
French Morocco, where they
were' interned until American
forces occupied the area last
month. Only some 300 Italians
were saved out of a force of
1,800 captured in Africa. The
rest of the passenger list was
mostly British, Including B0
women and children wives and
children of British officers
most of whom were saved.
The death toll far exceeded
previous warship disasters the
torpedoing of the Lusitanla In
1019, when 1,198 lives were lost,
nd the sinking of the Athenia
In 1939 with a loss of 1,104.
The two torpedoes which mor
tally wounded the transport
truck on the aide where the
Italians were quartered, ' and
' many of them were killed out
right. The others were thrown
Into a panic.
Survivors told of night of
horror as the Italians drowned
by scores, leaping over the side
nd overturning lifeboat.
Screams pierced the darkness as
sharks dragged off persons who
clung to the overcrowded boats.
Some who came through the
night alive were horribly man
gled by sharp-toothed barracuda.
Soon after the attack the sub
marines came to the surface and
picked up many survivors, In
cluding several hundred of the
Italians, who later were trans
ferred to lifeboats.
One German officer apolo
gized "for having to put Italians
Into the lifeboats with you Brit
ishers." Ship's officers and Royal Air
force men were taken prisoner
by the Germans, but other sur
vivors were released after
short period on the submarines,
during which they were given
wine end cigarettes. About SB
women and children spent the
night on a submarine.

The War Production board to
day ruled that an extra pair of
pants of matching material may
be supplied for any type of
men s uniforms.
Amending an order which pro
hibited sale of men's suits with
more than one pair of matching
pants, the WPB also ruled that
a custom of merchant tailor with
cuts of cloth less than six yards
long in his Inventory as of last
May 30 may use them to make
extra pairs of matching pants
for civilian use.
Uniforms affected by the
amendment. In addition to those
of the armed forces, include
those of the U. S. Bureau of
Customs, Forest Service, Immi
gration and Naturalization Serv
ice, Post Office department,
federal, state, county, municipal
or local government police
guards or militia; commercial
airlines and organized civilian
personnel assigned to the armed
forces.
POOLING OF STEEL

Complete pooling of the vast
steel and munitions resources of
the United States, Great Britain
and Canada was expected today
to result from discussion in the
next few days by a Joint steel
committee of all three coun
tries. The committee, meeting here
under the chairmanship of Hi
land G. Batcheller, chief of the
war production board's Iron and
steel division, will treat the steel
and munition output of the
three countries as a single unit
to enable their maximum Impact
to be directed toward winning
the war.
Pooling of allied shipping and
food resources already is in oper
ation, and office of war informa
tion officials indicated that a
similar share-out policy for steel
and munitions if aimed at

Alleviation of the west coast
butter shortage after January 1
was predicted today by Frank
H. McCampbell, marketing spe
cialist for the U. 9. Department
of Agriculture.
Larger shipments from the
midwest are expected, McCamp
bell said, and new celling prices
alto will aid In solving the
shortage.
The state shortage was laid to
population Increase and require
ments of the armed forces.

man Kllx, 83, must appear in
police court today to explain
why he attacked a burly street
car moturman with the makings
for a cheese sandwich.
Kllx, a diminutive oldster
wearing white knitted cap,
walked up to a streetcar at a
street intersection and shouted
through his flowing white beard
to Motorman Edward Riley:
"Back this car up and get It
off the walk so I can pass."
"I'll move when the light
changes," said Riley.
'Then you won't back up?"
asked Kllx.
"No." Riley answered.
Kllx responded by hurling a
Jar of mustard through the win
dow. Then Riley had to duck a
package of cheese and a pound
of butter which followed. He
descended from the car, but Klix
atttacked him with fists until
police separated them.
- At police headquarters, where
he was charged with disorderly
conduct, Kllx explained: "Al
most every day lo to the store
and find a streetcar hogging the
sidewalk. I decided to do some
thing about It. If I am wrong I
will suffer the consequences."

Ernest S. Madden returned
Saturday from Los Angeles
where he was called? by the
death by accident of his brother.
He was accompanied north from
Los Angeles by his father, N. J.
Madden of Hugoton, Kansas,
who will visit here before con
tinuing on to his borne in Kan
sas. Elton Way arrived Sunday to
spend the Christmas holidays
with his parents.

32, the nation's youngest chief
executive of a major city and a
lieutenant In the U. S. naval re
serve,' was reported missing in
action today.
The navy department notified
Zeldler's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Michael Zeidler, late yesterday
that their son was "missing In
the performance of his duty and
in the service of his country."

Sift flour, measure, and sift again with
soda, salt, and spires. Cream shorten
ing. Add sugar gradually, creaming
well. Add unbeaten eggs one at a time,
beating well after each addition. Add
carrots and potatoes. Dredge fruit and
nut meats in H cup of flour mixture.
Add flour to shortening mixture grad
ually, beating well after each addition.
Combine with fruits and nut meats,
stirring until blended. Fill well-greased
l)S-quart mold two-thirds full, cover
tightly and place on rack in kettle. Fill
kettle with boiling water to i depth of
mold. Cover kettle and steam 3 hours,
or until done. Add additional water as
needed. Serve hot with hard sauce or a
foamy sauce.
