CARGO PLANES TO
BE HUGE FACTOR
l!i PEACE TRADE
New York, Dec IJ fll.B
Civil Aeronautics Board Chair
man L. Welch Pogue tonight
predicted that cargo will be
carried by mora than 33,000
planes at freight rates of 15 to
20 cents a ton-mile after the war.
Pogue said in a speech before
the New York University club
that thousands of war-trained
pilots and ground service men
will find peace-time employment
In developing an era ot air com
merce, r
'Air cargo will create new
articles of commerce," Pogue
said. "Perishables that never be
fore could find a distant market
in even a refrigerator car will
flow along the air-trade routes
of the nation and the world.
Others will come to our table,
full-ripened and full-flavored.
The speed of the airplane, fly
ing great circle courses and
shrinking the World in size to a
matter of hours, will enable us
for the first time to show with
competitive promptness the mer
its of our products In the most
remote markets of the world . , .
our waole economy will be
quickened by these new forces.
There will some day be billions
of ton-miles developed by air
cargo and air cargo alone."
