As an aid to Improving the
health of all school children in
Jackson county representatives
of the Jackson County Public
Health association, sponsors of
the annual sale of 'Christmas
seals, are distributing to a num
ber of teachers a new teaching
unit entitled "Healthful Living
Out of Doors." The material
was written by Nina B. Lamkin,
director, division of public
health education, Nebraska
State Department of Health.
A very complete educational
campaign is being launched this
week in the Medford schools
through the leadership of Miss
Olive Curry, school nurse. The
double-barred cross of the na
tional association was distri
buted to many children yester
day with completion of some
endeavor, arranged to acquaint
the child with the need to buy
Christmas seals.
Because tuberculosis Is the
greatest health enemy to boys
and girls of high school age the
campaign is being carried into
the high schools with still
greater emphasis, Mrs. Elwood
Hedberg, president of the Health
association, explained yesterday.

ESTATE CLOSURE
In the matter of the estate of
Lou Walters against Gus New
bury as administrator, heard be
fore Circuit Judge Carl E. Wim-
berly of Roseburg yesterday, the
court handed down a decree in
which the estate was ordered
closed, the claims of Newbury
upheld, and costs and disburse
ments of the action awarded
Newbury.
The action con.-erned. 175.000
shares in the "Siskiyou Copper
Mines, invento'.y appraisal val
ue of $875. The action had its
origin in 1901 when Newbury
was named as administrator of
the Lou Walters estate. At the
time Newbury was not licensed
to practice law.
Newbury deposited the stock
with the county clerk, then John
S. Orth. for safekeeping in the
county vault, pending settle
ment of the estate. Newbury tes
tified that the stock had long
ago ceased to have any value.
Two heirs of the estate asked
an accounting, and the matter
was transferred from the probate
court.

AFRICA PROMISED
London, Dec. 11 (U.R) The
Daily Mail said today that Unit
ed States headquarters had is
sued assurances that the flow of
war news and pictures from
north Africa would be greatly
improved in the next few days.
The newspaper disclosed a let
ter from American authorities
which said: "We are well aware
of the deficiencies of the news
i and picture service from North
J Africa as compared with that
sent under British control from
j Egypt. We are doing all we can
to remedy the position as speed
ily as possible." .
Medford Gun club will be
open for shooting Sunday unless
heavy rains make the grounds
too wet for use. Shooters will
be able to park cars outside the
grounds under present condi
tions. The annual Christmas turkey
shoot will be held Sunday, De
cember 20, and both shoots are
expected to attract a large num
ber of Camp White contestants
as the camp has trapshooters
from all over the country.
Last Sunday the Medford
shooters were guests of the Cen
tral Point Sportsmen's club at
a turkey shoot. About 25 tur
keys were contested for.
Under construction at the Med
ford Airport is a new skeet
shooting field to be used for
training purposes for the air
force. The government uses
skeet as the best practice for
marksmen aviators. The field is
located near the former location
of the Medford skeet trap.
War savings stamps, as usual
will be given as prizes at the
shoot on Sunday and at the tur
key shoot both war stamps and
turkeys will be shot for. Hot
lunch and coffee will be served
at the shoot Dec. 20. The public
is Invited to attend either as
spectators or as contestants with
the same privileges and entrance
fies as gun club members enjoy.

TEACHERS ENLIST HOLLOWAY'S
Medford public school teach
ers are joining the ranks of those
in the county in support of the
10 per cent deduction plan
from salaries for purchase of
war bonds and stamps it was
stated today by the city school
superintendent's office. Most of
the teachers have signed up for
the plan, some taking more than
10 per cent and some less, it was
said.
This voluntary plan of purch
ase is in charge of a group of
teachers in each school. The am
ount of deduction is taken from
each month's paycheck and when
the money equals a bond, it is
purchased and mailed - to the
buyer by the school clerk. This
patriotic project applies not
only to the teachers but to all
employes of the public school
system in Medford.

The war price and rationing
board is now receiving applica
tion for "A" mileage gasoline ra
tion books board members stat
ed today. Registration will be
received from those who failed
to make application at the school
houses during November or
those who were unable to com
plete their applications at that
time.
It was explained that under
orders from Washington, D. C,
the board is required to remove
the first two stamps from the
books issued at this time.
Automobile dealers who wish
to apply for gasoline for cars in
used car lots may also do so at
this time through the local ra
tioning board office.

Douglas Mullarky, co-publisher
of the Burns TimesHerald for
the past 12 years, will be Earl
Snell's private secretary when
he becomes governor Jan. 11,
Snell said here today.
Mullarky attended University
of Oregon and University of
Southern California and began
his newspaper work in 1911 on
a Redmond weekly, The Oregon
Hub, where Snell also was em
ployed. He is past commander of the
Burns American Legion Post.
A meeting of all service station
men in Jackson county for the
purpose of being instructed in
the regular duties in connection
with tire and car inspection for
OPA will be held Tuesday even
ing at 7:30 o'clock in the county
court house auditorium, it was
announced today by local war
price and rationing board mem
bers. A group of service station op
erators were designated recently
as those in Jackson county to
handle inspection of tires and
cars which is required by a
federal ruling In connection
with nation-wide rationing of
gasoline for the conservation of
rubber.
