Chungking, Dec. 9 (U.R) The
Japanese have converted Man
churia Into a great armed camp,
stationing 1,000,000 "cold weath
er" troops along the Siberia
Manchurian defense lines and
extending rigid police control
over the civilian population, a
traveler from the north reported
today.
. This Informant said the Japa
nese soldiers in Manchuria were
trained for fighting In cold re
gions such as Siberia, Kamchatka
and even Korea. The troops face
toward Siberia along a primary
defense line extending from
Manchuli In the west to Suit en ho
In the east; and along a second
ary defense line from Tsisihar to
Harbin, according to this ac
count
Japaniiation Rapid
The traveler related that the
"Japanizatlon" of Manchuria has
proceeded rapidly since the out
break of the Pacific war. The
"Japanizatlon" of Manchuria In
cluded: 1. All Manchurian school chil
dren, college students, workers
and soldiers must bow southeast
ward each morning toward the
imperial palace at Tokyo.
2. Movies and newspapers
spread the theory that all Inhab
itants of Manchuria are descend
ants of a Japanese crown prince
who supposedly escaped from
Japan during a civil war thou
sands of years ago.
3. Japan has Increased the
number of Immigrants to Man
churia , to 1,000,000 minimum
annually.
4. Japan Is encouraging mixed
marriages among Japanese. Chi
nese, Mongols, Manchurians and
Koreans.

the slightest connection with
Chinese nationalism or patriot-

tate control. Thesa "concentrat
ed" villages are connected with
highways, railways and tele
phone systems for Joint defense
against possible uprisings.
7. A rigid Japanese conscrip
tion system now forces all able
bodied farmers and workers to
become either soldiers or Join
engineering corps consturcting
air fields and fortifications.
Three hundred thousand Chinese
farmers have been moved from
Manchuria to various battlefields

widespread misconception that
millions of civilian workers are
now enjoying nice, soft govern
ment Jobs.
Of the 2,500,000 civilians em
ployed by the government, the
president said more than 60 per
cent more than 1,500,000
were engaged In actual produc
tion of munitions for use by the
armed forces.

FATHER DIVINE IS
"Holy City" Cult Leader
Claims Negro Responsible
. For Arrest on Sedition.
San Francisco, Dec. 9. (U.R)
Second Lieut. Cherrill Hannon
testified at the sedition trial of
"Father" William E. Riker to
day that Riker last February
asked him to post literature at
Moffett field advocating that the
United States make peace with
the Axis "minus Japan.
Lieut. Hannon quoted Riker,
religious cult leader at Holy
City, Cal., as saying that Hitler
has "something on the ball" be
cause he did not use negroes In
his army; that Hitler's treat
ment of Jews "shows under
standing of life;" and that "we
must make slaves of the negroes
and orientals."
Subpoena Divine
Hannon was the first govern
ment witness as the trial opened
before Federal District Judge A.
F. St. Sure and a Jury of six
men and six women. Earlier,
at Riker's request, Judge St.
Sure issued a subpoena ordering
Father Divine, negro religious
cult leader, to appear as wit
ness.
Hannon. said he hitched a
ride with Riker February 3.
During the ride, he testified,
Riker told him he had "already
contacted 50 soldiers," and that
they "agreed with him" in. prin
cipal.
Defense Attorney Melvin Belli
said Riker had been misquoted
in the indictment.
"We will show that Riker
never made any statement that
we should fisht the Japanese
only' to the three soldiers named
in the indictment. Rather.
Riker said, 'we should not fight
the German and Italian peonle
after we have knocked out Hit
ler.' "
Urged Support of F. R.
Belli said Riker had distri
buted posters saying "to hell
with Hitler;" that Riker had ad
vised his own son, Willis, to Join
the coast guard; and that Riker
had spent $1,000 for newspaper
ads urging support of the president.
Riker alleged In an affidavit
filed in court that Father Divine
was responsible for his arrest.
Reasserting his Innocence of the
sedition charge, Riker said he
was the victim of "criminal
libel" published in Father Di
vine's "New Day."
Riker, head of the Holy. City,
Cal., religious community, was
charged In a federal indictment
with telling at least three U. S.
soldiers they had no business
fighting Hitler; that Hitler's anti-Jewish
crusade was commend
able; that America should co
operate with Germany and
Italy, and wage was only against
Japan.
Reno Worried By

Reno, Nev., Dec. 9. (U.R) At
tempting to work out a com
promise agreement with mill
tary authorities whereby Reno
night clubs and gambling houses
will not have to close at 12 mid
night, the Reno Bureau of
Hotels, Restaurants, Clubs and
Purveyors has requested the city
council to adopt an ordinance
making it unlawful to sell
liquor to service men after that
hour.

DYE GIVES AID
St. Louis (U.R) Scientists
have developed a dye which
within 60 seconds can prove
whether a "cold" is due to In
fection by common cold germs
or to allegic Irritation, accord
ing to Dr. French K. Hansel of
St. Louis,
Dr. Hansel described the dye
before a meeting of the Ameri
can Public Health association.
The dye is used to stain a sample
or nasal discharge which dis
closed tiny particles under a
microscope. The particles turn
blue If they are germs and red
if the Irritation is due to allergy.
Confusing the two afflictions
during treatment may be harm
ful. Dr. Hansel said. The dye
also Is used in diagnosing sinus
infections.
He said about 12 per cent of
the children who have chronic
colds and bronchitis suffer from
allergy rather than Infections.
Many unnecessary operations for
removal of tonsils are perform
ed on children because some
physicians fail to recognize the
presence of an allergy, he said.
NATURAL GAS SHORT
Washington, Dec. 9. (U.R)
The War Production board to
day reported that natural gas
shortage has developed in areas
in Texas, New Mexico and Ari
zona served by the El Paso Na
tural Gas Co., and that service
to war plants and army camps
has been reduced. .

London, Dec. 9 (U.R) The air
ministry revealed today that the
new American-made Ventura
bombers participated In the dev
astating "zero level" raid Sun
day on the Philips radio works
at Eindhoven, Holland.
It was the first official an
nouncement that the Venturas
were in operation in Britain.
The Ventura is a twin-engined
Lockheed-Vega plane, based on
the Lockheed Lodestar airliner
design, with a quick takeoff and
ability to climb swiftly at a very
sharp angle. It is faster, the air
ministry said, than the. Lock
heed Hudson bomber and Is the
bomber command's latest air
craft. Fly Very Low
Some bombers which raided
the Philips works flew so low
they brought back on their un-der-structures
all sorts of twigs
and even ducks.'
The air ministry said 'large
numbers" of the new weapon al
ready have been delivered in
England and that the Ventura
Is in mass production in the Unit
ed States.
The Ventura's bomb load Is
still secret.
(The Lockheed Lodestar was
a midwing monoplane designed
to carry 14 passengers and a crew
of three, powered with Pratt &
Whitney or Wright Cyclone ra
dial air-cooled engines, and rat
ed to handle loads up to 6.200
pounds. The horsepower of the
Lodestar varied from 1500 to
2100, depending on the type of
engines used.) ,
Several Downed
Led by Wing Commander R.
Young, the Venturas went in as
the second wave of the 100
bomber attack on the Eindhoven
factory. By this time, the air
ministry said, German anti-aircraft
defenses were fully In ac
tion. The bombers were met with
a hall of Jight flak.
"Several Venturas were
downed," the air ministry said,
"but the squadrons swept In to
the target at "nought fee.' name
ly, roortop height, and dropped
loads of high explosives and in
cendiaries right on the target
"The most experienced pilot
said he had never seen a more
concentrated or more effective
bombing."

Phillips, 48, "bogus" doctor of
Chico, on charges of making
fraudulent claims to obtain
money from a federal agency,
today was set for Thursday, Dec.
10, by U. S. District Judge Mar
tin I. Welsh.
The date was moved up three
days at the request of Phillips.
Phillips, who recently cron.
pleted a county Jail term in
Butte county for practicing med
icine without a state license, per
formed numerous surgical oper
ations while employed at a Chico
hospital.

mour, president of Yale univer
sity, disclosed today that 2.000
officers of the pre-flight train
ing school and 600 regular
army personnel will arrive at
Yale In January, taking over
