Barry Gilbert, 13. sdonted son
of Billy Gilbert, the film com
edian, wept last night when his
grandmother scolded him for
letting his pet parrot escape
irom its cage.
He had telephoned his grand-
mother. Mrs. Robert B. McKr
zie, to tell her about the narrot
and she told him he had been
careless. Because his father was
in the east on a war bond tour,
his grandfather promised to
come over and help catch the
Dira.
Only a housekeeper was In
the house with Barry. He found
a .22 caliber rifle, removed a
shoe, pressed the rifle against
his chest and pushed the trigger
with his toe.
McKenzie discovered the boy's
body and two notes In the liv
ing room when he arrived. The
parrot still was ambling around
the room.
"I love you with all my heart,'
said B note addressed to Mc
Kenzie. "Tell mother and father
I'm grateful for all they did for
me. The reason I did this Is be
cause grandma didn't believe.
I love you with all my heart.
No one did this but myself.
Please don't blame anyone for
it."
The other note, addressed "to
whom it may concern," said:
"No one did this but me.
Please don't blame anyone for

JAP AXIS LOVERS
Army Units Join Manzanar
Center Guards in Quelling
Uprising Among Colonists
Manxanar, CaU Dee. . dl.n
Axis sympathisers ware being
removed under military guard
from the Manxanar Japanese re
location center today to prevent
a recurrence) of the Pearl Har
bor anniversary riot between
pro-Allied and pro-Axis ele
ments among the 10,000 lntsrrnard
Japanese.
About 30 wives and children
of the 125 persons attached to
the non-Japanese administrative
personnel also were removed
from the camp for protection.
The roundup of Axis sympathiz
ers began after an outbreak
Sunday night when one Japan
ese was killed and nine were
wounded.
Military police normally on
duty at the camp were -aug
mented by regular army units
to halt the demonstration. Pro
Axis elements reportedly had
run through the camp shouting:
Pearl Harbor Cry
"Pearl Harborl Banzai!"
Even after martial law was
invoked and rioting quelled, the
military patrol at the camp was
strengthened and extraordinary
precautions taken.
Brilliant searchlights illumin
ated the camp last night as the
soldier maintained watch. Di
rector Ralph P. Merrltt had in
formed military authorities the
Manxanar police force could no
longer control the demon
strators. .
The uprising began near mid
night Saturday when six Jap
anese wearing masks attacked
and seriously injured Fred Tay-
ama, president of the Japanese-
American Citizens' league and
long-time advocate of loyalty
to the United States. A mob of
Axis sympathizers demonstrated
in front of the hospital where
he was taken.
Harry Ueno, asserted leader
of the mob. was taken in cus
tody. A mob stormed the Jail
and attempted to remove Ueno.
When tear gas failed to halt the
rioting, shots were fired, kill
ing one Japanese and wounding
nine.
Riot At Postoa
Several leaders of a riot at a
Japanese center in Poston. Ariz.,
already were being held In Jail
at Los Angeles. It wag believed
similar treatment would be ac
corded ringleader here.
There was no indication yet
however, that Axis and Allied
elements among the Japanese
would be segregated perman
ently.
All types of Japanese are rep
resented in the Japanese at the
center, from professional men to
laborers. American-born Japan
ese, Japanese-born and Ameri
can-born educated in Japan all
were bundled together.
It was from the latter two
groups that most of the Axis
sympathizer were drawn. Ad
ministrators of the center re
peatedly have emphasized the
loyalty of most of the American-
born internees.
