war veteran at 13, must return
to school for few years before
rejoining the marines.
George, who falsified his age
to Join the marines a month be
fore Pearl Harbor when he was
12, received his honorable dis
charge yesterday at Goat Island
in San Francisco Bay. Lieut.
Gen. Thomas Holcomb, marine
corps commandant at Washing
ton, said the discharge was
granted "for the convenience of
the government." .
Not In Action -
The boy, standing an Inch over
six feet and weighing 180
pounds, ruefully said reports
that he had participated In ac
tion at Midway and the Solo
mons were false.
"I don't know where they got
all those stories," he said. "I was
in boot camp in San Diego
when Pearl Harbor was at
tacked and I've never seen the
Solomons. I never got a chance
to shoot a Jap." '
The marine corps said George
was in San Francisco when the
Solomons campaign opened.
Despite his boyish face,
George kept his officers guess
ing for several months. They
were suspicious, but his extreme
ly large stature puzzled them.
Officers Get Wise
They learned his age in an
Investigation to establish his
identity as heir to an estate left
by his father. Then he admitted
he had left Eau Claire, Wise.,
where he had lived with his step
mother, Mrs. Anne Holle, to en
list. He told recruiting officers
he was 17 and forged his guar-

practices of loan sharks, particu
larly in defense areas, who have
been charging interest as high
as 240 per cent
The greatest number of com
plaints were from cities where
there are aircraft factories or
where other defense plants are
concentrated, mostly in the far
west and southwest. The com
plaint against interest of 240
per cent came from Texas.
Although Colorado is a lead
ing mining state its greatest
revenues are derived from agri
culture and travel.
