This Year's Leaves
Valuable Next Year
Saving falling leaves and
similar waste organic matter is
a step that can be taken now
to help make next year's garden
more successful. Use of this
organic matter will help in
loosening up tight soils and re
sult in easier cultivation and
better plant growth.
Sources of organic matter for
composting may be leaves from
deciduous ornamentals and fruit
trees. Pea vines, bean vines,
cabbage leaves and other garden
refuse are valuable for compost
ing. There are two ways In which
the leaves can be saved. One
is to make them into a compost
heap and the other is to apply
them directly to the garden soil
and wet down or cultivate them
in.

organic refuse one foot deep
and covering an area the desired
size of the compost heap.
Sprinkle over each square yard
of this layer the following ma
terial: . pound of ammonia
sulphate, Vi pound superphos
phate, U pound ground lime.
Add enough water to make the
layer moist. Rapid decomposi
tion depends upon the addition
of the chemical fertilizer and
keeping the materials moist.
On top of this first layer of
compost, place a layer of man
ure or soil. This layer should
be one or two inches deep.
Successive layers of organic
materials and fertilizers should
be added to the compost heap
until it is as large as desired.
Add water at regular intervals
to keep it moist, but not drip
ping wet. After the compost
pile has been completed for two
or three months it should be
turned over and repiled. This
mixes the compost and pro
motes rotting.
Compost piles made in the
fall will provide rotted organic
matter rich in fertilizer values
to spake or plow under next
spring. The compost may be
broadcast over the garden area
just before spading or plowing
is done.
Vegetable Storage
Bulletin Offered
"Vegetable Storage" is title of
a new bulletin issued by the
Oregon State college and avail
able at the county agent s office.
The following suggestions are
summarized from the bulletin:
In storing onions, bulbs should
be well cured in the field,
topped and put in open meshed
sacks or ventilated crates. A
temperature of 36 degrees to 45
degrees is desirable to keep
onions from early sprouting.
There should be circulation of
cool air where onions are stored.
Certain varieties such as Ber
mudas do not keep well. Yel
low Danvers keep well for a
long time.
Potatoes should be dried off
and sorted and stored for a few
days at a warm temperature to
allow injuries to callous. After
this, the tubers should be stored
in a dark place in a tempera
ture of 34 to 38 degrees.
Considerable decay often oc
curs in pumpkins and squash in
storage. This may be largely
prevented if the fruits are fully
matured in the field, carefully
handled and not subjected to
any freezing temperatures be
fore being stored. Skin bruises
and abrasions must be avoided
if the squash are to be kept for
any length of time.
Cut the squash from the vine.

Three Army Contests
West Point, N. Y.. Oct. 1.
(U.R) Transportation limitations
will permit the entire corps of
West Point cadets to see only
three army football games this
fall, Major General Francis B.
Wilby, superintendent of the U.
S. military academy, announced
today.
Arrangements have been
made for the cadets to attend
the Columbia, Notre Dame and
Princeton games In New York
City on October IT, and Novem
ber 7 and 21, respectively.

Grand Jury's Curfew Action
Commended By Bible Class
In a letter received by H. K. Hanna, judge of circuit court.
the Every Man's Bible Class of the First Christian church com
mended the grand jury on their suggestion of a proposed cur

president of the class, the letter
stated, "It was decided by the
