The next day. she has to to borne

hospital. When she returns. Be
asks to speak to ber privately.
Bee, havlni discovered that ber
hostility toward RlletU makes a
" bad impression on Dr. Ash, baa
decided to make a show of
friendliness.
CHAPTER XXIX
IVHEN the two girls reached
"the privacy of the waiting
room. Bee seemed embarrassed
and hesitant, as though she did
not know quite how to put
what she had to say.
Then, she stammered. I I Just
wanted to tell you RlletU that
I I'm sorry I've been so so nasty
to you several times especially the
other night. But. you know when
girl Is In love, she Isn't really re
sponsible for what she says and
does "
RlletU's heart gave a little Jump.
"You you mean It wasn't true
that Dr. Ash took me out for for
the reason vou said?"
"Well not exactly. It's true,
though, that we're engaged. You
see. after he gave me his fraternity
pin. we had a little spat and I guess
he asked you for a date Just to
spite me. Anyway when I heard
about It. I was so mad and Jealous
that I took It out on you and made
up that story about his betting he
could date you. I'm sorry now I
was so mean."
"Oh I see."
For an Instant, Rlletta had hoped
that everything Bee had said the
other night had been a He. but she
couldn't see that this explanation
and apology changed things much
Whether Carleton Ash had taken
her out on a bet or whether he had
done so to spite Bee. didn't make
much difference. The fact re
mained that he was engaged to
Bee.
"He and I have made up our
quarrel now. and everything's hunky-dory."
Bee added.
Rlletta held out her hand. "I
congratulate you," she said stiffly.
"Or perhaps I should congratulate
Dr. Ash."
"Thank you," Bee cooed. "Tell
me how Is your sister? I was so
sorry to hear of her Illness. Borne
one told me that they're going to
give her a blood transfusion. Is
that right?"
"Yes lust as soon as they find
some one with the right type of
blood. I hoped mine would be the
type, but It Isn't"
"I do hope the transfusion will
help her. Well, I must be getting
back to my patient. . . ."

right." Sam said soothingly. He
took RlletU's hand. "Listen, dear
I know this Isn't the right place
to propose again but. If you'd mar
ry me. Polly could come and live
with us. In a few months, after
I've finished my lntemeshlp, the
three of us could have a nice home."
RILETTA 8 lips quivered. "Sam,
you're a darling. You never
give up, do you?"
"Not where you're concerned
You know that I've loved you since
the time I used to ride you to school
on my sled I've loved you so long
that I can't very well stop now. can
I? Say youll- marry me. RlletU
Well make a home for Polly where
shell be happy If she's happy. It
will go a long way toward making
her strong and well again. For her
sake, say yes."
Rlletu looked at him searching
ly. "8am. would you really want
Polly to live with us?"
"Of course! I'm as fond of her
as though she were my own Uttle
sister. I'd be proud to take care of
her."
For a moment, RlletU was silent
She thought of how wonderful it
would be for Polly to have such a
home as Sam pictured a home
where she would thrive under lov
ing care. She thought, too. of
Carleton Ash. . . of his engagement
to Bee. .
Then, she raised her eyes to
Sam's and said slowly, "8am. I've
told you before that I'm not In love
with vou. out I think you're the
kindest, finest man I've ever known
and maybe the way I feel about you
Is a kind of love. If you want a
wife who can't offer you any more
than that. I I'll marry you."
Her sudden acceptance, after to
many refusals, took Sam com
pletely by surprise.
"You you will?" he summered
Incredulously.
"Yes. Sam." Rlletta laid her
