AT HEALTH MEET

ation meeting yesterday after
noon at the county court house
auditorium. He discussed health
problems and method! of main
taining good health especially
during time of war. The col
onel mentioned ways of the
army that would profit the civi
lian and stressed the point that
Camp White and the county
health department were plan
ning a 100 per cent cooperation
program in problems relative to
the health of the community.
He stated that citizens of the
present era have reached a
"lolly-pop and ice cream cone
eating age" at compared to pio
neers who found a healthy diet
In the "beef-steak eating age."
He pointed out that the mechani
cal inventions have caused the
individual to follow an easy life
and that the body must be ad
justed to the demands of mod
ern living. He suggested vita
mins be added to the diet if
necessary to maintain a health
balance but said that vitamins
can still be found in food by
giving families a well-rounded
menu. He Indicated this by
atressing the daily food Intake
of soldiers in the U. S. army.
He discussed other points of
interest between the camp and
civilian and will appear before
the association at a later date
for further discussion of pertin
ent details.
Prior to Col. Hutter's talk a
business session was held with
discussion of the coming year's
program. Miss Helen Bullis dis
cussed opportunities In the field
of home nursing and Mrs. Shel
by Tuttle spoke on Nurses' Aid
and its opportunity of service to
community and country.
A luncheon for chairmen of
the annual seal sale was held
during the noon hour with the
county well represented. Plans
were laid for the annual cam
paign. Dr. A. E. Merkel, county
health officer, held a question
answer period for problems of
community health Interest and
later introduced the speaker. A
tea hour in charge of Gold Hill
and Central Point women closed
the afternoon.
"We must win with the weap
ons we have now and not with
those we will have next year.
"We can only win If every
man capable of bearing arras is
at the front and we must put all
we have in the front line
whether this Is going to be de
leterious to post-war industry or
not."
That statement, In addition to
recent strenuous efforts of the
German government to force
labor and military strength In
the occupied countries to join
the nazi war effort, stimulated
belief here that Germany is
faced with a growing shortage
of manpower.

day.
"The postal service has a!
ready lost more than five per
cent of Its carriers to the armed
services," Walker said at a press
conference. "Many more will
be taken for fighting service
before this war is won. Eventu
ally, we'll have to take women
to fill their places."
Postmaster Frank DeSouza
said today that it had not as
yet been necessary to transfer
women clerical employes to
positions as foot carriers at
Medford postoffice. "We have
thus far been able to place
women employes in clerical
positions and let men carry the
70-pound mall sacks," he stated.
There Is one woman carrier,
however. She Is Mrs. Elva Sut
ton, who delivers special deliv
ery mail by automobile. She
has been employed in this capa
city for the past month.

USO COUNCIL TO
FOR SERVICE MEN
Medford USO council, meet
ing last night, moved unani
mously toward more active
participation In the local service
men's program. A sub-commit
tee was created to review and
expand the membership and to
nominate new officer!. The
council will meet again Oct. 13
to act on the report of this sub
committee. Member! of the subcommittee
appointed to revitalize the coun
cil were Sam Molton, chairman,
Father F. W. Black, and Mrs.
E. H. Judd.
The group recognized the need
for cooperation in this fall's
chest campaign and pledged
whole-hearted support.
It was felt that no Immediate
action should be sought on the
opening of the Salvation Army
service center originally con'
templated by the USO. Further
action on this will be held back
needing completion of the Ford
Garage building renovation, and
on further evidence as to what
nsed beyond the service avail
able through the two clubs now
In operation may be presented
at a later data when Camp
wmte has Its full .complement
of men.
The council further agreed to
make a full review of policies
covering use of volunteers In
the USO program and in par
ticular the functioning of the
junior nosxess group and the
handling of USO dances. The
Junior Hostess group has formed
ita own organization and is re
viewing principles and rulei for
members with the assistance cf
temor counsellor!.
The council agreed to invite
the hostess counsellor! and the
girls' and boys' elected InHm
to attend the meeting at which
the matter will be discussed.
