SALVAGE HEAD IS
LIONSCLUB MEET
R. O. Fowler, county .gent
and chairman of the Jackson
county scrap salvage committee,
addressed the Lions club dinner
meeting Wednesday at Earhart'l.
He emphasized the responsibil
ity that each citizen must take
upon himself to see that all
available scrap be reported and
where possible, brought to the
city collection pile.
He said that a major difficulty
experienced by the committee
was collection of scrap in out
of the way places that wher
ever scrap was lying In aban
doned mines or other projects,
authorization for Its appropria
tion by Its owners would facili
tate acquirement for defense
purposes. He explained that,
with some existing methods of
smelting, steel was produced
from Iron ore, while with others,
and the more commonly used
methods, scrap steel was a ne
cessity in the manufacture of
steel ingots, as It was combined
with the Iron ore.
Chairman Fowler emphasized
the Imperative need for the ac
cumulation of scrap as the lack
of it had slowed up defense
work.
President Frank Runtz opened
the meeting and turned over the
gavel to Program Chairman 3.
A McDougall, who Introduced
the speaker. A visiting guest
was Oscar Sabln.

land schools will open definitely
next Monday, according to Supt.
T. J. Norby, who stated today
that such opening would not
interfere with the harvesting of
fruit and crops, on basis of a
survey that the official made.
Supt. Norby stated they had
contacted SO growers In this
area; that seven of them had
replied to the questionnaire sent
out, and that three stated they
were using 30 Ashland high
school students on the harvest
ing and packing Job.
However, It was the decision
that at present the labor supply
Is not so critical that it is neces
sary to postpone school opening.

Cordy said today the above
might be the situation in the
Ashland district but not in the
Medford area. He described the
labor situation here "as very
acute," with still need for pick
ers. Both the season and the
handling of the crop is behind.
