One of the most pleasing sur
prises of the year, according to
advance reports, is the new mu
sical hit, "Orchestra Wives," a
gay story of the little women
who love the boys in th band,
which opens a three-day run to
day at the Craterian theatre.
First of all, the picture stars
the ba d that for three succes
sive years has been voted Amer
ica's most popular band in a poll
conducted by authoritative "Bill
board" magazine. That's Glenn
Miller, of course, and his talent
d crew of instrumentalists and
vocalists.
Then there Is George Mont
gomery, a handsome lad and a
trumpet player. And co-starred
with Miller and Montgomery is
darling Ann Rutherford, an or
chestra wife who alas! almost
becomes a brass widow.
The story is as tempting as Its
tunes and that's saying some
thing; for the same bright lads
who wrote "Chattanooga Choo
Choo" for Glenn Miller's pic
ture debut In "Sun Valley Sere
nade," have come through again.
They are Mack Gordon and
Harry Warren.
But that's only skimming the
surface. There's sultry Lynn
Bar! who sings with the band.
On hand, too, is Cesar Romero,
who likes the little women while
they, - In turn, worship the
ground he crawled out of. And
there's curvaceous Carole Landis
who has more sugar-daddies than
she can shake a hip at. Also fea
tured are comely Virginia Gil
more and vivacious Mary Beth
Hughes. A highlight of the film
Is a dance specialty by the Nich'
olas Brothers.

which is "Calling Dr. Gillespie,"
opening a three-day run today
at the Holly Theatre.
In this new series the famous
medico searches high and wide
for a new assistant to replace
Dr. Kildare. Three young in
ternes are at last singled out and
Gillespie gets down to the job
of picking one. But, before he
can decide upon any one of them,
murder strikes in the Blair Gen
eral Hospital and he is the sub
ject of the assailant. -

have been seized at the Mexican
border for having tires pur
chased in Mexico, will be con
verted into government use or
sold, the office of W. B. George,
collector of customs, said to
night.

The Jackson County Recrea
tion Committee announces the
closing of the playground on
East Main street. This project
has been carried on since June
with volunteer help from moth
era of children using the play
ground and other interested wo
men of the community. The pro
gram was planned and directed
by the Work Projects Adminis
tration staff.
This week the playground
equipment was returned to the
Valley View School to be used
there in the Kindergarten which
will open la the near future.
Mrs. Alfred Carpenter loaned
the equipment.
The city of Medford gave con
stant care of the grounds and
stored the equipment each eve
ning. The Boy and Girl Scout
offices assisted In this project in
delivering messages to children
from parents, in receiving calls
from the volunteer help and in
loaning some equipment.
Many toys were donated for
this project as well as other
equipment. The Chamber of
Commerce office received these
donations and telephone calls
listing offers of equipment to be
picked up.
As a community project the
committee feels that this first
attempt at conducting a super
vised playground has been high'
ly successful. The average at
tendance throughout the summer
has been over 70. In the begin
ning the grourds were super
vised only , three -"ays a week
then, as special courtesy to the
children of the army person 1,
the grounds were op, six d-ys
a week. With the splendid co-

Davls-Monthan Field authorities
announced late today that a B-24
army bomber with eight officers
and two enlisted men aboard has
been missing for more than 24
hours on a flight from Omaha,
Neb., to Tucson.
The plane was believed to be
missing over the Rocky moun
tain area In southeastern Colo
rado or northern New Mexico.
Col. Lowell H. Smith, com
manding officer of Davis-Mon-than,
requested radio stations in
that area to broadcast that the
plane was missing and to ask
any listener who could provide
any information about the plane
to contact the nearest military
authorities or telegraph him
collect..

Frank M. Franciscovich, of
Astoria, forceful member of thai
Oregon senate, died today In
Portland hospital after failing to
rally from a major operation.
The 45-year-old legislator had
been fighting for nearly a month
to recover from the operation.
He was born In Astoria Feb.
2, 1897. He graduated from
Mount Angel college and re
ceived an LL. D. law degree
from the University of Notre
Dame In 1921.
