They Spread "Keep Oregon Green ' Doctrine
YIELD FAT TAXES
Washington, Aug. 15 UP)
Although pln-bal! games and slot
machines are illegal in a large
part of the United States, the
treasury disclosed today that
more than 238,000 are in oper
ation and paying federal taxes.
The count was made In total
ling returns from new taxes im
posed by congress last fall on
pin-ball and other "coin-operated
amusement devices" at the
rate of $10 a year and on slot
machines and other "coin-operated
gaming devices" at the rate
of $50 a year. As of June 30,
the tax had been paid on 160,
894 machines in the pin-ball
class and 77,129 in the slot ma
chine group.
The treasury is not required to
know the local laws Involved
In operating these machines.
The officials, however, have
been getting numerous requests
from religious and reform or
ganizations for lists of persons
' paying the taxes in allegedly for
bidden territories.
The treasury has replied in
each case that the lists are open
to the public in the offices of
the various collectors of internal
revenue "at the convenience of
the collectors."
Every state, the District of
Columbia, Alaska and Hawaii
are on the tabulation made pub
lic by the treasury today. New
York led in the pin-ball class
with 22,143, Wisconsin in the
slot machine group with 7.247.
Oklahoma is at the bottom of
the list, with 33 machines In the
pin-ball class and 14 in the slot
machine group.

(JP) Richard D. Monohan, 55,
prominent northwest fruit dis
tributor and Milton business
man, died at his home Thursday
night after a long illness. He
had been in business at Milton
since 1922, acting as sales man
ager for Fruit Cooperatives at
Milton, Union, La Grande and
Lewiston, Ida.
