horse show classes will be re
ceived at 2 p. m. Saturday at
the fairgrounds. There is a $5
entrance fee for the stock horse
class, with prizes of $25. $19 and
(10 to be awarded. All horse
how classes art open to every'

' Judges for the horse show
were announced as Dr. G. A.
Git-en, W. H. Whitwell ' and
Lieut. Bert J. Staats of the state
police. Lynn Roycraft of Klam
ath Falls will be the announcer.
Saturday night's program will
open with the grand entry, fol
lowed by a demonstration by
the U. S. army drill team from
Camp White with the following
sergeants participating: Lowe,
Rodgers, Sewell, Simpson, Bell,
Johns, Waite, Hardy, Judd and
Goodnight Following this drill
will come rodeo events.
Next on the program will be
the Jumping horse class In which
Major General Charles H. Ger.
hsrdt, commander of the 91st
Infantry Division, will compete.
Other 01 st division officers
entered are Lieut HalUtrom.
Lieut Greenfield and Sgt. May,
Jtliey, Berry and Tokell.
More rodeo events will follow
this class with the three-gaited
norse class next on the program.
Rodeo events will come next to
be .followed by the ladies' and
mens stock horse class, the
pleasure-horse class and more
rodeo events to climax the show.
' Sunday night's program will
be changed In two respects, five
gaited class replacing the three
gaited class and family horse
class replacing the pleasure

MILINDIA PRUETT,
PIONEER, PASSES
, MUlndla L. Pruett. a resident
of Southern Oregon for over 60
years, pased away at a local hos
pital at 4:45 p. m. on Thursday
afternoon, after a brief Illness.
Mrs. Pruett was born In Rone
County, Tennessee on February
v, JB07. Being 79 years of age.
": She came west from Tennes
see with her parents when she
was quite young to California,
and came from Redding. Calif.,
to Southern Oregon. Her par
ants, Mr. and Mrs. Ruftis Cox
were early pioneers of this dis
trict Miltndla Cox was united
In mariage to Charles Pruett In
Medford, Oregon, In November
1887 and they have lived here
continuously since that time.
Mr. Phuett passed away In No
vember 1917.
She leaves to mourn her pass
ing two children, one daughter,
Mrs Mabel Stanley of Browns
boro, Oregon, and one son, W.
Guy Pruett of Eagle Point also
five grandchildren, two sisters.

and Mrs. Laura Pottlhayr of
Medford, one brother. D. T. Cox
of winters, Calif.

Chapter No. 8 Disabled Ameri
can Veterans' of World War I,
having gone through one war,
and having, most of us, faced the
enemy, In battle, receiving our
disabilities while serving our
country, believe that it Is fitting
that we express ourselves in
commending the merchants of
Medford for their backing, mor
al and otherwise, of this new
91st Division Activation, Satur
day, August 15th.
We know how much better a
soldier feels about the thing
when he arrives at the scene of
action against the enemy, if he
has left the home town In the
knowledge that the citizenry are
back of him 100.
We know that, from experi
ence, but we can only Imagine
the feelings of a soldier who has
left home with the opposite
views.
Most of the merchants of the
city are closing up, or remaining
closed until 1 p. m. on Saturday,
the day of this event, and we
feel that it Is fitting and proper
that they should do so.
After all, we fall to see where
there would be any waste of per
ishable foodstuffs In that short
time of closing.
Now, if all of the food stores
closed every Sunday, we believe
there would be some reason for
not caring to close for a while
on the day preceding it, but,
since nearly all of them remain
open on Sundays, we fail to see
that the damage would be great
A report from the secretary of
the Chamber of Commerce ap
peared in the Mall Tribune of
August 12. In this report Mr.
Hull states that Medford mer
chants have enjoyed an Increase
In business of more than 40
since the activation of Camp
White. Also, many lasting
friendships have been formed
between officers and men of
Camp White and the Medford
citizens.
In the face of these facts, we
do not believe that it la too
much of a sacrifice for the mer
chants to close for this event.

them are go doing.

in Australia.
American tobaccos and coffee
are a great luxury in the land
down under. A tin of cookies,
some gum, a roll of Tribunes, a
newsy letter or even a postcard
will make some fellow who Is
fighting our tight a bit happier
to know he la not forgotten.
Let's make an effort to get the
address of at least one of these
men and send s little encourage
ment and cheer. The new of
the past four days should eoe
