The last week of April Is
more than a week of mourning.
It is also seven days of mar
riages and engagements, busi
ness deals, reunion and song.
The first of May the horse
traders from Erin separate
again to roam over the country,
trading horses and mules.

America's last roaming clan Is busy since the nation's ration
boards decided the automobile was not here to stay.
These descendants of Irish
horse traders who migrated to
the United States before Bull
Run never have agreed that the
automobile is as good as a
strong mule.
"Jest look at what you can
do with a mule," said Pat
O'Day.
"You can hitch im up and tell
1m what you want done and
begorra, he'll do it But you
shure can't do that with one of
these danged cars. They're that
, stubborn, they'll act up every
tune," he said.
The horse traders show how
they feel about the automobile
by traveling In 25-year-old Ja
lopies and then only wnen a
mule can i carry me ioaa.
Camp In Tent-City
They are not at all worried
about the tire and gasoline
shortage.
"This here tire situation Is all
the bunk." said Mike McTigue.
"Why, all the government's got
to do is let us ship in about
ten million sturdy mules and
let the fellers hitch up arid ride
straddle to work," he said.
The whole clan is here now
the O'Neils, Finnegans, McGln
nesses, O Riley, O'Roarks and
Milligans camped in a tent
City.
They are not gypsies. They
re horse traders.
They buy their stock in the
fall at the big horse and mule
auctions in .Atlanta, Ga. Then
they split up into small groups
and start on their circuits over
the nation.
Judge Mules Quickly
They have made their living
by smart horse and mule trad
ing for nearly a century. Every
one of the 4,000 of them in this
country can tell a good mule
from a slacker with one squint.
The traders are one great
family, all related by blood or
marriage. What one of them
has, the rest of them share Not
one ever has been on relief,
they boast.
The original families came
over shortly before the Civil
wur from Ireland. Where they
had been horsa traders, follow
ing the country fairs. They set
tled in Washington for a while
at first, but city life irked them
and they took the highroad
south in covered wagons led by
a salty Irishman named Pat
O'Hara.
Atlanta looked like good
place to trade horses, so they
made It the center of their
wanderings. Other groups broke
off and one made its headquar
ters In Nashville. Another went
to Tort Worth.
The traders live in roomy
tents divided into compart
ments, carpeted with fresh yel
low straw. They sleep in four
poster mahogany beds with the
finest of mattresses.
Funerals Held In Atlanta
They do not eat on tin plates,
but on fragile Haviland china.
The Irish horse trader likes
color in his tent. Brilliant col
ors are splashed everywhere a
blood-red chair cover, emerald
green cushions, and bedspreads
of all hues.
On the center pole in every
tent there is a crucifix.
When a trader dies, his body
is shipped to Peachtree street In
Pittsburgh (U.B A new type
of glass that floats like cork and
can be used in life rafts, pre
servers, . lifeboats, pontoon
bridges and for Insulation pur
poses has been developed by a
Pittsburgh glass concern.
The new product Is called
"Foamglass" and has been de
veloped by the Pittsburgh Corn
ing Corp. Production has been
started in a newly-constructed
factory in western Pennsyl
vania, company officials an
nounced.
Fosscsslng a cellular struc
ture that gives It buoyance, the
new glass has a weight of only
10 pounds per cubic foot one
fifteenth the weight of ordinary
glass. Its closed-cell construc
tion is proof against absorbing
water and permits it to float Indefinitely.
A company announcement
said that government agencies
are Investigating the possibility
of using the glass as a substi
tute for cork, balsa wood, kapok
and cellular rubber.
The material is produced by
firing ordinary glass which has
been mixed with a small quan
tity of pure, carbon. It can be
drilled with ordinary tools. .

since sugar rationing came into
effect. , ,
Times were when -a ranger
would disappear irom city life
with his mules and summer food
supplies for practically six
months never to be seen by a
soul until the fall rains brought
him back to civilization.
Today the sugar rationing
system has entirely revolution'
lzed a ranger's secluded moun
tain existence. Instead of taking
his usual summer supplies in
one trip and then hiding him
self away for the .duration of
forest-fire danger the forest
guard now has to. plan. a. trip .to
the flatlands once every two or
mree weeKs lor the valuable
"sweet coupons."
The forest rangers have no ex-

20 POLISH WORKERS

ed at the village of Gerbatka,
near Radom, on charges by the
Germans that they prepared to
blow up a factory. Five hun

to a concentration camp.

from spoiling

ing close to home for your vacation this
year which means that household duties
may go on as usual, vacation or no vaca
tion. But with a little clever planning, you'll
be amazed at how much more time there
is for leisure. And you'll find vacations at

has suggested several tune-saving ideas.
- See if you don't think they're good ones.
. Plan menus ahead of time. Allow plenty
of variety, including a few foods yon, don't
often buy; but choose things that cook
quickly, or may he partially prepared in
advance. Don't undertake elaborate, time
consuming cookery unless that's your idea
of funl
Plan shopping lists with menus.
Streamline your shopping trips to a mini-
mum. There's no point in spending your
vacation traveling back and forth to the
store. Buy the major part of your gro
ceries early in the week. Then, in between
tunes, you'll only need to buy the most
perishable foods.
. Be leisurely. Shop early in the day when
stores are less crowded you are leas
rushed and the selection is better.
Be forehanded. Plan foods that can be
prepared in advance. Meat loaves, casse
roles, molded salads, puddings and cookies
are good examples.
Be cool. Do your heavy cooking in the
oool of the morning, or even the night be
fore it possible.
' Be smart. Purposely plan meat leftovers
every so often for easy second-day cook
