MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1942.
WILL ASK F. R. TO
Chiang Kai-Shek and Ivan
Maisky to Be Asked to
Back Independence Plea.
By PrMton Grover
Bombay, Aug. 7 (JP) The
working committee of the All
India Congress party voted to
day to appeal to President
Roosevelt. Generalissimo Chi
ang Kai-Shek and Ivan Maisky,
Russian ambassador to Britain,
to support its demands that
Great Britain grant India Imme
diate Independence.
Maulana Abdul Kazan And,
president of the Congress, was
authorized to dispatch the ap
peals as soon as the Congress
committee passes upon a resolu
tion calling (or a mass campaign
of passive desistance to continued
British rule.
Endorsement Seen
Endorsement of the retolu
tion, backed by Mohandas K.
Gandhi, was regarded as a fore-
cone conclusion.
Azad opened the meeting with
a speech calling for Immediate
Indian independence but saving
the committee did not want Brit
ish or American armies to leave
India.
Gandhi, who followed him
and received an ovation, told
the committee he did not want
the Japanese In India because
that would mean the end of
China and perhaps Russia.
Gandhi himself sent a mes
sage to the Chinese today to
"let China know that the strug
gle is as much for her defense
as It Is for India's liberation."
He declared that India's "ability
to give effective assistance", la
dependent on her freedom.
Moslems Unconvinced
Meanwhile, having heard that
Azad had said congress leaders
were even willing to let the
Moslem league take over the
running of India if the British
would get out, Mohammed All
Jinnah. resident of the Moslem
league, declared that the Mos
lems would be glad to do so but
that the congress leaders "dont
mean a word of what they say."
Jinnah, as a spokesman for
the second-largest of India s
complex religious and political
groups, said the congress leaders
"mean to play on the credulity
of the Moslem and attempt to
divide them. They simply are
trying to put the English into a
corner."
Insistence of the Moslem
league that Mohammedans' be
safeguarded against Hindu dom
ination has been one of the nu
merous problems Involved in
Britain's efforts to solve the
Indian question. The All-India
congress party on the other hand
has objected to proposals for
Mohammedan Independence.
Jinnah says the Congress
party Is a purely Hindu organi
zation, and not, as it claims,
representative of all Indians.
