DACON looked at a muffin and

reached for nil butter knife.
"Hardacker found out when the
woman was supposed to have ar
rived in town, checked the hotels
and learned she'd stopped at the
Rita for three days. He got her
forwarding address it was the
house she rented hung around

"Who rented that other apart
ment? Murdock asked.
"Hardacicer. Raeburn came In
the office the day Hardacker got
Clarke's address. He said ne

He munched his muffin and
washed it down with coffee.
While Murdock and Fenner ex
changed glances, he picked up the
other hall ana buttered that.
"How do you figure Raeburn
killed Hardacker then?" Fenner
asked.
Bacon looked up through his
browa and kept on eating until
nea nnisnen the mumn.
"You ...ink he didn'J?"
"I asked vou how vou figured.1
Fenner said. "Raeburn hired him
for a job ot work. Why does he

"He could have tried to black
mail him. couldn't he?"
"Not Hardacker."
"That's what you say." Bacon
put down his cup. "According to
you fellows every guy with a

JOYCE MURDOCK put out her
cigarette and leaned back in
her chair, her frown fixed and in

later, found Clarke dead. He

you." He leaned back, looking at
Murdock. "There's plenty 1 don't
know. It's not pat by a long shot

THE telephone rang in the liv
ing room and he stopped until
Loretta said the call was for
Delia. Bacon stood up and leaned
on the back of his chair.
"Hardacker must've got in touch
with leaeburn after the killing
or the lirst thing the next morn
ing and told him what he knew
or enough of it so that Raeburn
could add it up and find out
where he stood. But Raeburn
couldn't do much about it then
because we pinched him, and
we've had him locked up ever
since. Until last night , , , Hard
acker knew plenty, all right, but
he was a private dick and he
wouldn't tell us." He gave Fen
ner a sour glance. "Oh nol He
had to get in there and pitch for
Hardacker first
Delia came back. 'That was
Uncle Dean." she said. "He
sounded frightfully worried. He's
coming over now.
She paused, frowning. "He said
when he couldn't get me last
night he thought I might be out
with Ward." She looked at Bacon.
When was Mr. Allen released?"
"Last night"
"What time?"
"Oh about seven-thirty."
Delia looked at Jovce and sat
down, her eye. troubled. "Oh."
she said finally. "I didn't know.

Joyce knew how she felt and
started to say something com
forting, but Murdock spoke up.
"What time did you let Rae
burn out?"

ner. ''When you called and told
me what happened and it looked
like there was a tie-up between
Clarke and Hardacker I was all
set to grab Allen and so to town
on him.
Then when Mrs. Murdock said
she'd seen Raeburn" he nodded
to Joyce "that was okay too.
Raeburn knew what he had to do
and he made a bee-line for Har
dacker's office. . . . We found the
hack thai took him. The driver
was cruising by Headquarters
when Raeburn flagged him. The
cabby let him out at the corner
of Morton and Green that's lust
a block from Hardacker's olfice

USD BARN DANCE

DRAWS BIG CROWD
The third USO barn dance of
the summer was held Friday
night with large attendance and
hilarious response. Ike Dunford,
leader, and Bill. Wenner, caller,
did an excellent Job of teaching
and mixing the young people.
Other Grangers who came In
pioneer costume to demonstrate
and help with the old time
dances were Mrs. Myrtle Wilson
Mr. and Mrs. Wyn Arnold. Mr.
and Mrs. Harold Tolle, and Mr.
and Mrs. Rufus Finn of the
Jacksonville and Central Point
Granges. Banjo and guitar were
played by Mr. and Mrs. C. A.
Sander of Medford. Guest of the
Granges was Mrs. Bonnie Carlon
from Portland. USO barn dances
will be continued each Friday
night.
Anyone have men's swimming
suits which are not being used
this summer are urged to bring
them to the USO club house as
soldiers do not have their own
suits and USO is now sponsor
ing many swimming parties each
week. Immediate response to
this need will be greatly appre
ciated. An outdoor party will be
given honoring the colored
troops of the 91st division of
Camp White, Tuesday from 8 to
10 p. m. at "Topsides." Host and
hostess for the evening will be
Mr. and Mrs. A. S. V. Carpenter.
Refreshments and entertainment
will be provided.

the Federal Bureau of Investi
gation office here, announced to
day the arrest of six German
and one Italian non-citizens
within the past few days for
failure to observe curfew and
travel regulations. They will
be given a hearing by the enemy
alien hearing board.
