Captain ,AnIU Morrill of the
Red Cross Motor Corps has re
turned after an absence of three
weeks. While on vacation in San
Francisco, she was In contact
with the Red Cross and the
Motor Corps of that city, and
gained much information for
her own group.
Captain Morrill brings word
that United Nations seamen on
active duty in death-ridden
oceans need reading material to
ease bit the strain of tense
days and weeks they must spend
out of sight of land, home and
friends, with no diversion except
the constant presence of danger
to relieve the monotony.
Captain Morrill urges the pub
lic to bring to the desk of the
Motor Corps at the office of the
Red Cross In the court house,
anything in the way of fiction,
non-fiction, scrap books of Jokes
and picture magazines to be
dispensed to ships going out to
sea. Those unable to go to ine
Red Cross, may call Captain
Morrill at 3794, or the Red Cross
4403, and a member of the
corps will call for the books.
To facilitate collections and con
serve tires, donors are asked to
collect books from their neigh
bors and friends so that several
books may be picked up at once.
The regular meeting of the
Motor Corps will be held Aug.
10 at 7:30 p. m. In the auditor
ium of the court house. J. A.
Laux, the new Red Cross field
director from San Francisco,
will speak and important plans
will be discussed with the group.
The meeting is compulsory, and
all members will appear in uni
form by order of Captain Mor
rill.

FIRI AND FUEL
Whatever your method of barbeenn
glowing coals, not leaping flames, are
what you want The best fuels are chaiw
coal, pressed sawdust logs, and hard
woods. Oak, applewood, maple, hickory,
birch, ash, beech, and'eottonwood burn
with a sweet taste and aroma that per
m rates the meat.
GRILL BARBECUING
In grill barbecuing, meats are cooked on
a grill or grate about 4 to 8 inches above
coals. This is the most common method
and the best method for steaks, ground
meat patties, lamb chops, pork chops,
sliced bacon and ham, small whole fish,
sliced fish, broiler chickens, wieners, and
spareribs.
To grill barbecue), have'grill hot be
fore adding meat. Sear meat quickly oo
both sides. Then broil S to 10 minutes on
each side, turning frequently and basting
with melted butter, cooking oil, or barbe
cue sauce (this increases flavor and
tenderness). You can use a pastry brush
or a dean cloth tied to end of long stick
for basting. Use long tongs or long-handled,
t-tined fork to turn the meat.
Avoid pricking the lean part of the meat,
or the juices will escape.
Hate: Chicken needs to be cooked about
tO minutes on each tide to assure tender
ness. Pork should be cooked at least IS
minutes on each side. Beef should be cut
about 1 inch thick. Thinner cuts may dry
out in cooling; thicker ones may not
took through.
STICK OR TOASTER BARBECUING
This is the best method for wieners,
kabobs, small thick steaks and chops,
strips of bacon, small parboiled link
sausages, and slices or cubes of ham. Yon
can usa a long green-pointed stick, a
long-handled fork, or a toaster. Be sure
to turn the meat, and baste often.
