Foremost of the events to

Dickinson Day" Sunday, when
Major General Charles H. Ger-
hardt, commander of the 91st
Infantry Division, presents to
the big Crater hurler a gift from
the Medford Athletic association,
with Joe later to receive a
"purse" contributed by fans who
aDDreclate what he has done for
the Craters since Joining the
team a little over a month ago,
Then, there Is that situation
revolving around Jim Snyder,
the Craters' new lefthanded
pitcher. Snyder, who had been
with Dorris all season, was re
leased by the Lumberjacks last
Saturday, was immediately sign
ed by the Craters and, in his
first start for the locals, came
up with a four-hit, 11 to 0 blank
ing of the Grants Pass Merch
ants. Although Snyder undoubt
edly doesn't feel too bitter
toward the 'Jacks, being as
how he was sort of kicked up
stairs from a third-place club
to one leading the league, he
can be expected to bend every
effort to aa attempt to show
Manager Talbot what a mis-,
take that portly gentleman
made la cutting him loose.

Then, there Is tha acuta em
barrassment suffered by Dorris
the last time they took on the
Craters. Tha 'Jacks, In that
aeries, dropped both games to
our boys. That wouldn't have
been so bad had It not been for
the tact that one Crater pitcher,
nd only one, pitched both those
games.
The nltcher. of course, was
Pvt. Joe Dickinson, Me whipped
'em in the first game, going the
full nine innings, and he whip
ped 'era in the second, flinging
eight frames. This doesn't- set
well with the lads from Califor
nia and when Joe strides to the
mound Sunday afternoon on his
own "day", the visitors will
have blood in their collective
yes. They'll ruin "Joe Dickin
son Day" for Joe Dickinson If
humanly possible.
AU in all it should be a whale
et series. The Craters, with a
full two-game lead over the
Klamath falls Pelicans with
only six to play, can't afford to
drop one or both of their Dorris
contests at this stage of the flag
chase. For, while Medford and
Dorris are meeting, the Pelicans
will be entertaining the weak
sister, cellarite Grants 1'ass
Merchants, and are almost cer
tain to nab both clashes.
Assuming that Klamath
wallops Grants Pass twice.
Medford must win two against
the 'Jacks in order to main
tain its margin of leadership.
If the Craters split, their lead
will be reduced to one game,
and, if they should suffer a
double setback at the hands of
Dorris while Klamath is cop
ping a pair, the race will be
all tied up.

12 Games as Tribe Beats

The Chicago White Sox have
been going nowhere in the
American league ever since the
season started, but they have at
tained one distinction denied
every other club In the circuit
They are the only team to sweep
a doubleheader from the world
champion New York Yankees
and they have accomplished the
feat not once, but twice.
When the Sox first turned
the trick In New York on June
28, the Yanks were in a slump
and the Sox didn't get much
credit. It was like picking on
a man while he was down.
But they caught the cham
pions last night at the crest of
a winning streak that included
four straight victories and 19
of their last 18 games and pro
ceeded to whip the Yankees at
the kind of ball for which New
York is noted slugging.
Chicago Rallies
The first game was played at
twilight and the Yanks gave At-
ley Donald a 8-1 lead with five
runs in the third inning, two of
hem on Joe DIMaggios 18th
homer. Then the Sox slugged
back to win 6-8 in 11 innings
with old Sam West driving in
four of Chicago's runs. He
doubled for two to tie the score
in the ninth and singled home
the deciding tally In the 11th.
The second game, played un.
der the lights, saw the Sox take
an early 5-2 lead, the Yanks tie
the score In the sixth, and then
Chicago come back with two
runs in its hslf of the same
frame to win 7-8.
This merely dented the
Yanks' big first plaoe margin to
13 games, because the Boston
Red Sox were nosed out 7-8 in
11 innings at Cleveland when
Roy Weatherly singled with the
bases loaded. Eight pitchers
and five catchers were used
during the struggle. -
The other American league
contests were equally wild.
At St Louis the Washington
Senators squeezed past the
Browns again 11-10 with four
runt In the ninth Inning.
The Detroit Tigers walloned
the Philadelphia Athletics 12-7
in an affair that would have
been considerably lopsided ex
cept for five Detroit errors.
"Bums" Up Lead
In the National league the
Brooklyn Dodgers enlarged
their lead to eight games by
beating the St. Louis Cardinals
4-S In a twilight tussle that was
halted In the last of the seventh
by wartime dimout regulations
in the New York area.
The two dnublcheadors which
completed the senior . circuit
card were halved. The Chicago
Cubs welcomed Van Lingle
Mungo into the majors a bit
rudely, beating the New York
Giants 4-2 even though held to
seven hits in the first game.
The Giants took the second
game, however, 3-1 with Dick
Bartell and Babe Young hitting
homers and Bill Lohrman driv
ing in a run with a single in ad
dition to pitching nine-hit ball.
The Pittsburgh Pirates took
their first game at Boston 3-0
on five-hit hurling by Truett
(Rip) Sewell after being shut
out for seven stanzas by Al
Javery. Then the Braves re
taliated with a 8-8 derision In
the nightcap In behalf of big
Jim Tobln.

Dom Provost of Ashland, presi
dent of the Oregon-California
baseball league, disclosed today
that Red Talbert, manager of the
D.rris, (Cal.) Lumberjacks, had
filed a formal protest on the
game between the Klamath Falls
Pelicans and Dorris, won by
Klamath Falls, 14 to 8, last Sat
urday night
Provost said Talbert's protest
alleged that a ball, hit by a
Klamath Falls batter, bounced
over the fence and was called a
home run Instead of a two-base
hit contrary to rule 41, section
3 of the official playing rules,
which states: "A fair hit ball
that strikes the ground and
bounds into a stand or over a
fence shall ba a two-base hit."
The Dorris manager. Provost
said, filed $10 with the protest,
in accordance with Oregon
California league rules, and ac
companied the protest with no
torized affidavits signed by five
persons that the ball bounced
over the fence. Provost said he
was making a thorough investi
gation of the case and would
make a decision when all the
facts were learned.

Grayson M. Martin, 59, was
charged by State Department of
Public Health Inspectors here
today with selling bottled sea
water at $20 a gallon as a rem
edy for various diseases.
The inspectors said Martin.
Jailed on a charge of violating
the state health and safety code,
had sold soma 2.000 gallons in
this district In five years.
Every time a ton of scrap Iron
or steel Is used, more than four
tons of iron ore, coal, limestone
and ether natural resources are
saved.

The lanky southpaw held the
Los Angeles Angels, leaders of
the Pacific Coast league, to
three hits last night to shutout
the Angels, 1 to 0, in a nightcap
to a doubleheader.
San Francisco dropped the
seven-inning opener, 4 to 8, as
Sam Gibson, veteran chucker,
was driven from the mound In
the midst of a five-run assault in
the third when Glenn Stewart
cracked a two-run homer.
