TRUCK TIRE QUOTA
CUT DRASTICALLY
BY
Machines Used in Essential
War Effort, Public Health
and Safety Only Eligible.
Only trucks engaged in serv
ices essential toxthe war effort
or public health and safety will
be entitled to recapped or new
tires under a drastic revision of
the tire rationing regulations
announced today by the Office
of Price Administration through
Hobart Price, executive secre
tary of the local board.
The revision, said to be neces
sitated by increasing evidence
that quotas will not provide for
all those on present eligibility
lists, will cut off from tires all
privately operated trucks car
rying alcoholic beverages, soft
drinks and similar beverages,
tobaco products, confections,
candy, flowers, toys, novelties,
Jewelry, furs, radios, phono
graphs, musical Instruments, or
other luxury goods, unless the
transportation of such things is
only incidental to the main serv
ice performed by the vehicle.

Unable to Increase quotas be
cause of the rubber shortage,
OPA asked the advice of the
Office of Defense Transporta
tion as to what reclassifications
of motor transport services
could be made to effect the
necessary reductions and at the
same time preserve the most
essential operations. OPA has
followed the lines of ODT
recommendations.
Trucks transporting raw ma
terials, semi-manufactured or
finished goods, including farm
products and foods, will be rec
ognized as eligible for tires only
if the services they perform are
essential to the war effort or
public health and safety.
Also dropped from "List A"
eligibility under the same con
ditions are private carriers fur
nishing transportation for inci
dental maintenance services
the cleaning of office buildings
is given as an exampleor for
the purpose of repairing any
portable household effects or
providing materials or services
solely for landscaping or beau
tificatlon of any construction
project or other establishment.

Typographic Artisan Has
Devoted Over Three De
cades to Designing Type.
Los Angeles (U.R) Frederic
William Goudy, hailed as one
of the greatest typographic ar
tisans of all ages, is now work
ing on his last type design.
White-haired and 77 years
old, he envisages the end of
his long career. In the three
decades and more that he has
devoted to his trade, the master
craftsman has designed ' 113
faces of type.
Asked the name of his final
contribution to the printing
craft, he said, "I'm going to
call it the 'Goudy 30'," explain
ing that in printing "30" long
has been the symbol for "the
end."
Goudy yet doesn't know just
how his "30" will turn out and
described it only as Roman type
with a Gothic influence. Judg
ing from his 113 past perform
ances, it should be something
of simplicity and beauty.
Designs For Reader
But the ruddy, genial typog
rapher believes he has made
enough type faces for one man
and has decided to retire at the
completion of the "Goudy 'SO'."
His theory of type design is
that "fine printing demands fine
type a type without manner
isms, its forms distinct, its legi
bility easy."
Printers credit Goudy's influ
ence with shearing type of the
curlicues, scrollwork and furbe
Idws which typographers prior
to his time thought necessary.
'They should be designed to
help the reader, not to display
the skill of the designer," he
said.
The dean of type designers
has a favorite of the hundred
odd types he has designed the
face described as "Medieval,"
inspired by an old manuscript
which he Romanized.
"I've never been seduced by
the modernistic trend," he re
lates, "I've always been a tradi
tionalist. I've taken the best of
the old designs and improved
them to the best of my ability."
Goudy views his contribution
to one of the world's oldest
crafts from a matter-of-fact
standpoint. He speaks with
pride, not of his life work, but
of his accomplishments during
his spare time.
"I've published four books
now, and they're all selling,"
he declares proudly. "How's
that for a fellow who never
even went to college?"
