has been named Richard Lewis.

Biddle road has received word
of the serious illness of her son,
Ernest Robertson in the Royal
Air force in Great Britain.
Robertson attended school in
Medford and has many friends
here. Anyone caring to write
to him in Great Britain may
contact his mother.

C Transferred Word has been
received here that Aaron J.
Ayres, son of Mr. and Mrs. E.
A. Ayres of Jacksonville has
been transferred to the army air
corps. He recently completed a
course in parachute packing,
ground training and Jumping
and is now a qualified para
chutist. He has been stationed
at Fort Benning, Ga., and Is ex
pected home on a furlough be
. fore entering the air corps.
Baby Born Word has been
received in this city of the birth
of it son to Mr. and Mrs. Clay
Higgins of. San Francisco, July
8 at St. Francis hospital. Mr.
Higgins is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Thomas Higgins of 712
West 11th street and Mrs. Hig
gins is the daughter of Clifford
a Hickson of Eagle Point and a
'-granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs.
John Norris of Jacksonville.

To Portland Mr. and Mrs.
George A. Codding of 1015
Queen Anne avenue left last
night for Portland, where he
will confer with Barnard H.
Ramsey of the Department of
Justice relative to his duties as
newly-appointed special attor
ney for the government. Mrs.
Codding will attend the state
convention of the American
Legion auxiliary Tuesday, as a
delegate from here. The Cod
dings expect to return to Med
ford Wednesday morning.
Meeting Friday The meeting
.of local democrats to elect a
new Jackson county Democratic
Central committee chairman to
succeed George A. Codding, re
signed, scheduled to have been
held last night, was postponed
ft'.to next Friday at 8 p. m. at 212
' Liberty building, according to
Dr. E. W. Barnum, committee
chairman. Codding's resigna
tion followed his appointment
as special government attorney
In connection with the govern
ment purchase of land for Camp
White and other Oregon defense
projects. The Hatch act pro
hibits federal employes from
holding office In any political
organization.

that someone had stolen a re
capped tire from his garage on

called by the sudden death of
his brother-in-law, Charles J.
Russell. Mr. and Mrs. Russell
had visited in Medford frequent
ly and have many friends here.

are visiting Mr. and Mrs. D. D.
Davis of 905 West Tenth street.
They are greatly impressed with
the Rogue River valley climate
and are hoping conditions will
warrant their making their home
in the valley.

Roanoke Rapids, N. C, is visit
ing in this city for a month.
Reed, a former Medford resi
dent, Is a technical sergeant in
the U. S. army stationed at Roan
oke Rapids. He is the son of Mrs.

street and the brother of Wil
liam Reed of this city.
Traffic Violations Almena
M. Dobbins paid $2.50 fine in
the city police court yesterday
for double parking. Thomas
Shattuck and Robert H. Kent
forfeited $2.50 bail on the same
charge. Loyad Langston for
feited $1 bail for Improper park
ing and Arvell George Carter
paid $10 fine for violation of a
basic rule.
In Stockton Walter Cormany
writes friends in Medford that
he is now residing in Stockton,
Cal., and is employed as super
intendent of electrical Installa
tions in the shipyards there.
He designed the electrical lay
out and equipment in the ship
yard where he is superinten
dent. He is a former Medford
resident where he was well
known as a electrician.
Walkers Return Mr. and
Mrs. James W. Walker returned
to Medford by train Monday
morning from Chicago, where
for the past year and a half Mr.
Walker had taken a course in
certified public accountancy,
which he completed. The Walk
ers will make their home here.
Mr. Walker was for several
years office manager of the Cry
stal Springs Packing company.

Cited to Court Earl Lock
hard of Route 2 was cited to
justice court Friday by state
police for failure to stop at the
scene of an accident. Edward
H. Engel of Georgetown, Cal.,
was to appear in Justice court
today, charged by state police
with failure to stop at a stop
sign. Also appearing today wast
to be George M. Young of Grants
Pass, charged with driving a
car with a void foreign license.

91ST DIV. HEADS
Major General Charles Ger
hardt. commander of the 91st
division and now a member of
the Medford Rotary club direct
ed the program of that organiza
tion at a luncheon meeting today
at the Hotel Medford. Brigadier
General P. W. Clarkson, assist
ant division commander and
Brigadier General Edward S.
Ott, artillery commander, were
guest speakers.
'The 91st will be a tough out
fit, one of which Medford and
the entire nation will be proud,"
Brigadier General Clarkson. for
mer Texas A. and M. football
star, assured Rotarians. He ex
pressed gratification in the ex
cellent facilities of Camp White
and voiced his approval of Med
ford and the southern Oregon
country.
"Id rather be a victorious pri
vate than a defeated general,"
Brigadier General Ott said in
his brief remarks. "We army
men want the same thing that
every other good American
wants the right kind of peace."
Brigadier General Ott,
wounded in battle during the
first World war, told Rotarians
that he "had a score to settle
with the Germans then the
Japs."
In preliminary remarks, Gen
eral Gerhardt reminded Medford
people that colored soldiers
now in this community should
be accorded every consideration
and courtesy. He also reminded
local people that colored soldiers
"die in battle like any other
fighting men" and recalled the
heroic service of negro troop
ers at Pearl Harbor and Bataan.
A quintet comprising colored
soldiers of Camp White enter
tained with vocal selections
during the program.
ONE DAY LATER
Members of the committees
working on the annual Fiesta
sponsored by the League of
Women Voters announced today
that the date has been changed
from July 28 to July 29 at the
Porter J. Neff residence, North
Barkeley Way.
The evenings entertainment
prom!-es to be gay and varied.
Aiicia Ruhl is in charge if a
horse-racing booth, Lois Pringle,
a dart concession and an "intel
lectual" quiz program, old-fashioned
square dancing and an
operetic singer of note are
among the activities scheduled
on the program.

Highlight of the annual Red
Cross luncheon to be held Thurs
day at Hotel Medford will be
a short talk by Major General

The meeting will be opened
by Seth Bullis, chairman of the
Jackson county chapter with
reports by committee heads and
chapter officers and one-minute
talks by chairmen of vol'inteer
services. A picture of the na
tional volunteer service confer
ence, held recently in Los An
geles, will be given by Mrs. A.
S. V. Carpenter, Jackson county
representative at the session.
The committee in charge, con
sisting of Mrs. Carpenter, Mrs.
Justin Smith. Mrs. Ralph Bard-
well and Mrs. Harry Holmes,
have planned floral itecorations
to carry out the colors of the
oipht volunteer service corp
uniforms.
All interested Red Cross mem
bers who plan to attend are
asked to make reservations by
calling the Red Crosa. office in
the county courthouse Wednes
day.
Three minor burglaries were
reported to city police yester
day as occurring over the week
end. Paul and Al Selby reported
to city police that someone en
tered the Home Grocery, 606
East Main street, which they
operate, sometime Sunday night.
About $6.40 was taken on small
change. Entrance was gained by
knocking a panel out of the rear
side door. Gum. cigarettes, bread
soda pop. cakes and pastry also
were missing.
About $30 was taken from
two lockers in the men's rest
room of a local hotel. Locks were
pried from the lockers. It was
reported.
The A. Davis residence, 313
Mae street, was entered Sunday
evening while Mr. and Mrs.
Davis were absent. A window
screen was cut to gain entrance
to the house. Although the
rooms were thoroughly ransack
ed nothing was taken ,lt was
reported to city police,

CLAIMS IT'S MISTAKE
Max Layne, a cantonment
worker, arrested on telegraphic
advices for grand theft and for
gery at San Bernandino, Calif.,
has waived extradition and will
be returned to the south. Layne,
arrested by the sheriff's office,
claims the legal action is all a
mistake due to a misunderstand
ing over poker game payments.
