PAIR TO DIE IN
BORROWED CHAIR
Huron, S. D., July 18. IP)
Two men, condemned for murd
er, will be executed in South
Dakota in a borrowed electric
chair.
The South Dakota board of
Charities and Corrections dis
closed yesterday that arrange
ments had been completed to
borrow the electric chair at the
Illinois state prison at Joliet,
and that the executions, sched
uled for the week of August 9
and November IS, would be car
ried out.
The necessity of borrowing a
chair arose when the South Da
kota legislature re-enacted capi
tal punishment in 1939, after a
25 year absence, but made no
provision for a chair. Warden
G. Nortch Jameson of the state
prison at Sioux Falls, tried un
successfully to borrow chairs in
Indiana and Vermont, before ar
ranging for the one at Joliet.
