World War I Captain Offers
To Teach Language To
African Bound Soldiers.
New York U.R) George W.
Sutton, Jr., the man who lupt
the state department Informed
of Japanese activity In this
country a few years ago, has
made an offer to teach the
Swahill language to IT. S. troops
destined for African service.
Sutton, who learned Swahill
many years ago during a two
year stay in Zanzibar, says that
the army is considering his of
fer seriously. He points out that
the language is spoken by some
180,000,000 persons In Africa
and rates seventh as the most
widely used language In the
world.
A captain In the tank corps
In the last war who has applied
for service again, Sutton al
ready has gotten up a complete
course of 10 lessons containing
some S00 words or about
enough "to get a man from one
end of the continent to the
other ,if he has any ingenuity."
He thinks that a 700-800 word
Swahill vocabulary is all that a
white man needs.
Went to Washington
One of the better known pub

Classes In national defense
work at senior high school are
progressing well, E. H. Hedrick,
city school superintendent, in
charge of the classes said today.
However he stated there is a call
for more welding students and
the ship carpentry class is open
to more enrollees.
Representatives from various
shipyards on the Pacific coast
have been in Medford during the
past week and this vicinity has
been assigned a quota of 400
welders between now and No
vember 1. Women are being ac
cepted on same terms as men
and those interested in securing
training in welding may call at
the employment office or regist
er at the city scnool superin
tendents office in the city hall.
Students in the ship carpentry
class are making good progress
in their classes and about eight
are expected to leave in the near
future for work in shipyards
upon release from their canton
ment projects. Anyone interest
ed in inspecting the class ac
tivities may call at the senior
high school shop on South Oak-
dale avenue any evening. Ap
plications are being received at
the city school superintendent's
office in the city hall for regis
tration in the classes. Carpenters
especially are urged to take the
opportunity to further their
training.

UP) Search for six "parachutes"
reported seen descending in an
area near President's Roosevelt's
Hyde Park estate was renewed
at dawn today, but the belief
was expressed they may have
been festival balloons.
A farm superintendent's un
confirmed report of sighting
parachutes late yesterday after
noon brought a small army of
military, FBI and state police
officials to the scene but they
postponed their search until day
break today after townsfolk ad
vanced a theory the reported
aerial objects probably- were
balloons sent aloft by a group
celebrating a religious holiday.
Inspector William Schatzman
of the Connecticut state police
said investigators were trying to
determine whether any fire
works celebrations were held in
the area, as first reported, but
added "so far we have not found
that any such celebrations were
held." .

HO IN COUNTY
Hog production In Jackson
county will be 33 per cent
heavier this year than in any
previous year. County Agent
Robert G. Fowler reports. The
increase is due to the higher
price for pork and pork prod
ucts as set by the government
and a bountiful nature.
The war is increasing the de
mand, both at home and abroad.
In recent years there has been
a drop in hog-ralsing due to low
prices.
