Milton Richard May, 17-year-old
driver of a lumber truck, nar
rowly escaped serious injury
when his truck, loaded with fin
ished lumber which ha was haul
ing from Central Point, turned
over at the Plaza corner Wed
nesday afternoon.
May 6tated that wnen ne
started around the curve he rea
lized that the five foot stack of
lumber of his truck was slip
ping and he made a hasty re
treat from the truck cao, snut-
ting off the switch before he
started crawling out.
When the truck had reached
the oedestrian crossing directly
in front of the entrance to me
city recorder's office and turned
over. May was on the running
board. His only Injury were
scratches received when his
head hit the rear-view mirror
on the right side of the truck.
The truck was carrying slight

TOT DROWNS IN WELL
Ore eon City. July 16. (f)
Edwin Tschudy, 19 months oldj-
fell into a 30-foot well and was
drowned last night at the farm
home of his parents near Clacka
mas. The father lowered him
self Into the well with a rope
and recovered the body which
was brought to the fire station
here but resuscitation attempts
were In vain.
Cairo, July 16 (P) Heavy
bombers of the United States
army air forces made a daylight
attack on the axis base of Ben
gasi, Libya, yesterday, starting
a large dock fire.
The bombing was one phase
of the continuing battle of the
western desert, in which RAF
and allied airmen attacked Ben
gasi and Tobruk, both far west
of the fighting zone, and at
tacked the axis armies "In
force" at the front.
On the ground the German-
Italian forces of Marshal Erwin
Rommel were reported to be
giving ground on the central
front west of El Alamein, but
British headauarters acknowl
edged that the Germans had
achieved some gains in the
coastal zone and "partially suc
ceeded" in reestablishing them
selves at Tel El Eisa.
British Move Up
As the result of an attack
launched before dawn yester
day, British troops pushed for
ward in the central sector to
secure objectives at the western
end of a ridge south of El Ala
mein, a communique said.
Prisoners were taken, out
their numbers are not known,"
the bulletin added.
The assault apparently was
launched to relieve pressure on
Australian forces holding re
cently-won positions at ei i
Eisa the "Hill Of Jesus" ana
evidently was at least partly
successful, for the communique
announced that imperial troops
continued to hold high grouna
in that area.
Enemv forces wnicn succeed
ed In occupying positions at
Tel El Eisa Tuesday night were
heavily bombarded all aay yes
t.rH.v hv British artillery and
planes and a number of axis
tanks were knocked out of ac
tion, the bulletin reported.
