Senator Lodge Reports on
Tour of Duty in Africa
High Praise For Soldiers
Washington, July 14 r
Senator Lodge (R-Mass), report'
ing on a tour of active army
duty in Africa, told his col'
leagues in the senate today that
American soldiers had perform
ed like veterans and their tanks
had stood the test of battle
well in the Libyan desert fighting.
"I came home convinced that
we have an army which can do
big things historic things," de
clared the youthful senator in
his first apeparance in the sen
ate since his return to Washing'
ton. Lodge was dressed in a
conventional white suit, instead
of the major's uniform he had
worn for months and which
Secretary of War Stimson had
asked him to lay aside to return
to his legislative duties.
Action Told
Lodge related how an Amer
ican tank detachment, which he
described as a "token force,'' had
engaged axis forces in the period
of June 11 and June 12 on a
ridge south of Tobruk.
"Our soldiers fought the
enemy in M-E tanks," he said.
"There was heavy fire from
enemy guns. There were, how
ever, no penetrations.
"Our boys registered direct
hits on a number of German
tanks and the hits stopped
their tanks. We have in the
General Grant a vehicle with
stout armor. It has a gun which
is not out-ranged by the enemy
and with which the enemy can
be given a hard, stiff, destruc
tive blow.
"Let me tell you something
about our American soldiers.
he continued. 'They went into
that fight on the other tide of
the world in a new .strange I
might say weird setting. They
volunteered for hazardous duty
in the army of nation not
their own.
Hardships Endurad
'They endured heat, blinding
dust, prolonged Journeys over
routes without the usual aids to
navigation. They lived on slim
rations. Ther was little sleep
for any of us.
"When the time came to go
into action in a situation which
was critical in the extreme they
stood their ground, they did not
panic, they were aggressive,
cagey and smart.
"And when they were order
ed out, they brought all their
equipment with them and emer
ged safe and sound without a
scratch. Less might well have
. been expected from veterans.
More could have been asked
from no one."
Lodge said the detachment
was made up of a group who
volunteered for service where
members could experience act
ual tank - warfare.
'This took us to the Libyan
desert where we stayed in the
thick of things until we had ac
complished our mission, he
said.
First Class
- "I have seen American equip
ment in action, and it has been
my privilege to be with Amer
ican soldiers on the battlefield,"
he continued. "It is good to be
able to say to you that both
men and equipment are first
class. "The severe test which our
equipment received on maneuv
ers was intensified in battle.
Our trucks, our light tanks and
above all our medium tank

STAND ON WAR IS
TOLD BY LECTURER
The following lecture, "Chris
tian Science the Discovery of
Life Eternal," was given at the
Holly theatre Monday night by
Paul Stark Seeley, C. S. B., of
Portland, Ore., member of the
Board of Lectureship of The
Mother Church, The First
Church of Christ, Scientist, in
Boston, Mass.:
- What , light does the Science
of Life eternal throw on the
world situation of today? War,
judged from the standpoint of
spiritual Science, is dense ignor
ance, barbarism. From -the
standpoint of present-day human
thinking, it is sometimes the
only way that mortals not yet
fully understanding the omni
potence of supreme Mind can
ward off those evil forces that
would. If unresisted, turn back
the progressive appearing of the
true idea of God and His son,
man, in the thinking of men.
Mrs. Eddy abhorred war, but
she did not become lost in meta-
physical- abstractions, which
human thought has not yet
proved its ability to demons
trate. At the time of the Span
ish-American war she wrote
words which may have a present-day
meaning when she said.
Great occasion have we to re
joice that our nation . . . will be
as formidable In war as she has
been compassionate in peace"
(Christian Science versus Pan
theism, pp. 14, 15).
A vital quality of democracy
is that it encourages the pro
cesses of progress and salvation
for all mankind. . Democracy
evidences a better concept of
God ' in human ' consciousness.
Democracy does not resist, en
danger, or combat the appearing
in thought of the savior of man
kind. The great improvement
in human life, socially, politi
cally, economically, that char
acterizes it flows naturally from
its placing no form of political
priestcraft between man and his
God.
One thing Is worse than war,
and that is to be faithless to our
ideals, to love our human sense
of life more than those (deals.
The Master saw the conflict
in human thought between the
human sense of life and the
spiritual ideals for which all, if
necessary, must be sacrificed
when he said, "For. whosoever
will save his life shall lose it
but whosoever shall lose his life
for my-sake and the gospel's,
the same shall save it."
The distorted concept of law
and government being aggres
sively presented to. the world to
day would, if it could, wedge
between the individual and hi:

old homes can be made just as

Many of the color schemes in
the new guide are for home

The Christian Science organi
zation has taken an unequivocal
stand for the all-out defense of
the democratic ideal of govern
ment, at any cost, because it re
gards the issue as basic. The
progress of humanity, it knows,
can be served, not by running
the smallest chance of having
foisted upon mankind a mortal
man-made autocracy, but only
by keeping open the unobstruct
ed way for the fuller appearing
of God's free and theocratic gov
ernment of His own.

Invasion of America
Via Tampico Planned
Long by Hitlerites
Mexico City, July 14. (It)
A former Mexican military at
tache to Berlin said in a pub
lished interview today that Ger
many had planned to land an
invasion force in Tampico to at
tack the United States and had
offered Mexico "territorial com
pensations" for its support. .
The plans were completed
during the invasion of Poland,
two years before the United
States entered the war, Lieut.
Col. Armando Lozano Bernal
said. Bernal has just returned
to Mexico with diplomatic re
patriates. The colonel said the German
plan was discussed with him
and that the nazis envisioned
taking over the Mexican Gulf
coast port in the oil region and
using it as a base against the
United States.
Bernal remained In Germany
until last May. Since then,
Mexico has declared war on
Germany and her axis partners.
He declared that German
strength was being sapped de
spite military gains and that the
war was bound to end in victory
for the united nations.- -

Why You Should Take Your
In-laws For a Ride
I mm rvi '
Don't get me wrong! What I mean
is that it's now the patriotic thing to
fill your car full of in-laws, neighbors,
or fellow workers before you drive
anywhere.
That may seem like strange advice
coming from a man who sells gasoline
but we Standard fellows expect to be
in the business for a long time. In the
long run, whatever is best for you mo

That's why we're strong for every
thing that saves your tires, and why we
hope you will "double up and share the
wear" whenever you can. We may sell
you less of that Standard Gasoline, but
that's a small sacrifice if it makes
