Raft's Life "Broadway"
Is Stage Hit. , . '
What might easily be mistak
en for George Raft's own life
story opens a three-day run
today at the Craterian theatre
with the first local showing of
"Broadway." Pat O'Brien is
Baft's co-star.
: Raft is shown as he Is today
a famous screen star and the
picture also traces his rise from
an obscure "hoofer" to his pres
ent status. O'Brien has one of
his best roles as the "toughest
cop on Broadway." It is inter
esting to note that, in the screen
play, O'Brien repeats one of his
greatest successes on the stage,
having played the same role in
the stage play.
Janet Blair, Life Magazine's
favorite army-camp entertainer
and model, has her first screen
role in the romantic lead op
posite Raft.
Basically, the story of "Broad
way" is a highly exciting drama
dealing with an ambitious hoof
er in a speakeasy who, on the
eve of his big break, becomes
involved in. a gangland killing.
Adding complications is a sec
ond killing to which. Raft is
likewise linked.
Staged largely backstage In
a speakeasy on Broadway, the
film gains momentum through
the intervention of O'Brien, in
the role of a clever detective,
and the accumulating sidelights
thrust into the plot as others
become involved.
Setting and incident closely
parallel those familiar to Raft
during his earlier days on tsroaa-
way, when, after turning trom
professional fighting and base
ball, he took up dancing as a
career.
