navy, made its first test flight
over Lake Washington today.
Built by the Boeing Aircraft
company, which originated and
now builds the flying fortress
bombers for the army, the ship
was described as able to carry
a larger bomb load than any
naval plane now In use.
It is in the weight class of
four-engine aircraft but is a
two-engine airplane, with the
engines believed to be the most
powerful aircraft power plants
now built anywhere.
Boeing said the ship was "de
signed as a long range scouting
and bombing plane, capable of
hunting out and destroying
enemy submarines and surface
vessels." It Is of all-metal con
struction and has living accomo
dations for a lu-man crew.
The XPBR-1 Is the first r..v.i
aircraft built by Boeing since
1933. when an experimental
carrier lighter was made.
