Graduated Pvt. Henry W.
Head, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wil
liam Head of Applegate, was
recently graduated from the
Chanute Field school of the
army air forces technical train
ing command, according to a
press release from the Illinois
field. While at Chanute field
he has been undergoing training
in various technical operations
vital to the maintenance of the
country's fighting planes.

Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Gates reports that merchandise
is hard to get due to manufac

fortunate in filling their fall
merchandise needs, he said.

Council Session
Slated Tonight
The city council will meet in
regular semi-monthly session in
council chambers on the third
floor of city hall at 7:30 to
night. Persons having business
with the council are asked to be
present at that time.
PEDESTRIAN LOSES LEG
Pendleton, OTe., July 7 (P)
George Dennise eldery Echo
carpenter ,is recovering in a
Pendleton hospital today from
a leg amputation after he was
struck by an automobile at
Stanfield late Sunday. Dennise
also received a fractured back
and pelvis.

of U. S. Navy Losses
In Hawaiian Attack
New York, July 7 (IP) The
Tokyo radio broadcast today a
Japanese navy ministry recap
itulation claiming "complete re
sults" of the Pearl Harbor at
tack were five U. S. battleships,
two cruisers and one tanker
sunk and four battleships, six
cruisers and two destroyers
damaged.
These figures, the latest in
progressively advancing claims
since the attack, compared with
the actual losses which Secre
tary Knox announced on Dec.
IS as one battleship three de
stroyers, a target ship and a
minelayer lost and one battle
ship and number of other
vessels damaged .One of the de
stroyers listed as lost the Shaw
subsequently was repaired
and is back in service.
The Japanese, in their first
claim on Dec. 9 said two battle
ships and a minesweeper were
sunk and four battleships and
four cruisers were damaged,
and still later went so far as to
say the American fleet had been
"wiped out."

103-Year-old LeHer
Reveals Details of
Wild Chase, Lottery
Springfield. 111. (U.R) A wild
chase by stage-coach, a poker
game for high stakes, a lottery
ticket worth $25,000 and a con
fession to grand larceny made
up a story revealed in a 103-year-old
letter found recently in
the archives vault at Spring
field. The letter was written In 1839
by Orin Hamlin soon after he
had stolen $11,500 of state funds.
He told John Dixon of the State
Board of Commissioners how he
had fled on a river boat and had
subsequently lost $8,000 of the
money in a poker game.
Dixon and a companion Imme
diately started a pursuit by
stagecoach that carried them
through most of the Eastern
states. Unable to locate Hamlin,
