Billy Hulen Says:
Decision Not Yet
Made On Staging
Of Golf Tourney
Decision on whether the an
nual Southern Oregon:Northern
California Invitational Golf tour
nament will be held this war
year is being held in abeyance
for the time being, we have
been Informed by an executive
of the Rogue Valley Gqlf club.
Because of the rubber situa
tion, travel difficulties and pos
sible gasoline rationing by Lab
or day week-end, customary
dates of the tourney. It Is felt
the out-of-town entry list this
year .would be sorrowfully
meagre, perhaps almost non-ex
istent.
It was pointed out, however,
that with the influx of a great
many golf-playing officers for
Camp White, together with the
local civilian pill-busting bri
gade, a fairly strong field for
the tournament was a possi-
. bility,- and thjrt- if conditions
were favorable the event would
probably be held.
The past few years out-of-
town shotmakers have far out
numbered Medfordltes entering
the biggest tourney in this sec
tion, and the last two champion
ships were captured by an "out
sider," young ' Dick Haneo of
Marshfield, now attending the
University of Oregon.
While it would be ralher
strange to see the tournament
staged without those many
out-of-town clubbers on hand
competing for the various
pieces of hardware, the tour
new would undoubtedly be I
success If a sufficient number
:-ef good golfers entered from
Camp White. And. If local
members of the club signed
up in greater number than

Anyway, nobody knowi (or

making a decision one way or

Through Promoter Mack Lil
lard, Sockeye Jack McDonald
has offered to wager U. S. legal
tender in the amount of SO dol
lars, with Prince Selaki Mihali
kis, that he (Mr. McDonald) will
whale the daylights out of him
(Mr. Mihalikis) in their grap
pling rematch Monday night.
McDonald, Lillard claims. Is
really wrought up over the
thing. In their fracas last Mon
day Mihalikis tossed Sockeye
through the hemp and the latter
hurt his back where it struck
the edge of the platform. This
made McDonald easy stuff for
the Prince when he returned to
the ring, but it didn't do much
good for McDonald s temper.
Now, the big ex-logger is so
"mad" at Mihalikis. and so
confident he can whip him,
that he wants Mihalikis to
match' his own SO potatoes,
with the winner to rake in
the dough, Lillard claims the
business is entirely on the
level, that McDonald is furi
ous. As yet Mihalikis hasn't
stepped forward to accept the
wager, Mack says.
Problem-Child Ted Williams
of the Boston Red Sox, fined
$230 by Manager Joe Cronin
and given good "bawling out"
in front of his teammates for
sulking and loafing in a game
against Washington, apparently
isn't overly endowed with
brains.
The Red Sox, white hot, are
currently chopping down the
Yankee lead to the point where
they actually have a chance to
pull one of baseball's biggest up
sets and beat out the New York
ers for the pennant and world
series dough.
Yet Williams, star of the
team, thinks so much of his
teammates and of his own
financial future that he falls
to hustle and acts like nothing
but a spoiled brat, just be
cause some of the guys in the
lettfield bleachers gave him a
bad time.
We think Joe Cronin would
have been Justified in socking
Williams twice $230, and sus
pending him for a spell, to boot.

Tentative Lineups
Given for All-Star
Clash Next Monday
By Judson Bailey
New York, July 3 (IP) The
public was given a peep today
at the probable starting lineups
for the major league all-star
show that will be staged in the
gloaming at the Polo grounds
Monday.
Neither Joe McCarthy nor
Leo Durocher, the rival man
agers, was able to name his
starting pitcher because of the
two doubleheaders that face
each club in the big leagues this
weekend. But assuming that
righthanded hurlers are on the
mound at the beginning, the bat
ting orders tentatively will be:
