Long Investigation of Roxy
Ann Properties With Aim
of Furnishing Cantonment
Coal mining properties in the
Roxy Ann area, arc being and
have been for the past year
thoroughly investigated by the
O Jackson County Chamber of
Commerce with the view of re
opening them to produce fuel
sumption, a chamber spokesman
for Camp White and local con
said today.
Although the quality of the
coal available in this territory is
not of the highest, the spokes
man said it was of a sufficiently
good grade for most purposes
and that plans were being made
to develop the deposits.
In a communication to the
Mail Tribune, printed yesterday,
J. Little of Portland claimed
that an old mine four miles
south of Medford would pro
duce 80,000 tons of coal if put
into operation. Little, who
wrote that he formerly managed
the coal properties near Roxy
(X Ann for the Southern Oregon
Gas company, claimed that a
three-foot vein existed in the
mine, which was developed over
45 years ago by his father for
the Southern Pacific company.

Seattle, July 1 UP) A Seat
tle dentist, with an eye for In
vention as well as cavities, has
devised a one-shot hypodermic
syringe which he foresees as a
life-saver for wounded men on
the battlefield. It's a cellulose
wrapped automatic device, to be
used and discarded like a paper
cup.
Dr. Ralph Huber, the creator,
explains that its great virtue is
in eliminating the time-consuming
process of sterilization and
the danger of infection from
improperly sterilized needles.
The invention consists of a
glass tube and a needle with a
trigger on it. Upon Insertion of
the needle, the trigger automati
cally releases the contents of
the tube. It can be operated
easily with one hand.
Dr. Huber said the syringe
could be made, sealed hermeti
cally, for about lit cents.
ASSESSOR DELAYED IN
DISTRICT VALUATIONS
The county assessor's office is
being delayed in compiling the
school district valuations for the
tax year starting today, due to
land within the cantonment be
ing removed from the tax rolls.
Schools in the Beagle, Antioch,
Agate , and Antelope districts
are affected. The amount of
acreage involved has not been
computed.

Claude G. Watson, a transient
from Texas, charged with petty
larceny was sentenced to 30
days in the county jail by Jus
tice of the Peace W. R. Coleman
yesterday. With money orders
for $200 made out to himself in
his pocket, he stole four paint
brushes valued at $12.32 from
the Montgomery Ward store.
The authorities report in his
auto, bearing Texas license
plates, there were a large num
ber of hat.s, pruning hooks, and
paint brushes.
Rollie L. Sites of Central
Point, paid $10 and costs for
having no PUC permit. Terry
Marsh was fined $1 and costs
for no muffler on his vehicle,
and Daniel R. Walters $1 and
costs for no operator's license.
Vermont was the first state

Ballot in November

measures will be on Oregon's
general election ballot In No
vember, the state elections divi
sion said today.
Tomorrow is the deodllne for
filing completed initiative meas
ures, but the division said it did
not expect any more to be filed.
Measures include:
Initiative providing that all
state income tax revenues in ex
cess of $7,750,000 a year shall
be used for school purposes.
A proposed constitutional
amendment increasing legisla
tors' pay from $3 a day for 40
days to $8 a day for SO days.
A proposed constitutional
amendment repealing the article
of the constitution providing for
the rural credits loan fund.
A proposed constitutional
amendment providing that gaso
line taxes shall be used exclus
ively for roads.
A proposed constitutional
amendment to permit the legis
lature to restore voting rights
to persons convicted of felonies
A referendum to restrict or
prohibit net fishing In costal
streams and bays.
A referendum to tax cigarettes
at two cents per package, the
proceeds to be used for old age
assistance and vocational education.
Two Plead Guilty to
Appropriating Calf
Orville Pollock and Wray
Shinfessel, of the Eagle Point
district, charged with larceny of
livestock, entered pleas of guilty
in circuit court yesterday, after
waiving Indictment. They are
accused of shooting a yearling
in the Butte Falls district, and
appropriating the meat to their
own uses. Both are married.

passed as soon as further invest
