of canning sugar at one time, al
though such practice is urged
when convenient, according to
Richard G. Montgomery, State
office of price administration
director.
To eliminate clerical work
among the local ration boards
the state office directed the
boards to urge home canners to
declare and purchase their
year s supply. Some boards, ac
cording to reports reaching the
state office, have held that this
Is mandatory, which is not the
case.
"It is, of course, impossible
for persons to forecast accurate
ly the amount of fruit which un
ripened crops will ultimate
bear," W. C. Dlrker, sugar ra
tion executive, said, "and any
home canner who uses up her
supply of sugar actually in can
ning may secure additional sup
plies later in the neawn by
applying to her local war price
ration board.
Local sugar ration board said
today that the above ruling Is
in effect here.
The rationing board also
called attention of retailers that
stamps five and six were good
for only two pounds tugare
apiece. Number five stamp is for
the month of July it was ex
plained and number six stamp
is to be used for the month of
August.
Coast Dimoul Seen
For War Duration
Salem, June 30 UP) The
dlmout of the Pacific coast prob
ably will last for the duration
of the war, Frank A. Hansen,
San Francisco, lighting engineer
for the region office of civilian
defense, said yesterday at a
meeting here of civilian defense
officials and of representatives

Motorists Warned To
Obtain Federal Tags
Portland, June 30. (IP) Mot
orists were warned today that
federal officers will start tagging
automobiles after July 1 if they
do not have federal use tax
tamps.
. J. W. Maloney, internal rev
enue collector, reminded drivers
that present stamps expire June
30. The new stamps, costing J3,
will be good for the 1942-43 fis
cal year.

Salem, June 30 UP) Cre
ation of two new units of the
civilian defense organization
was announced today by State
Civilian Defense Coordinator
Jerrold Owen.
The U. S. citizens service
corps will include those work
ing in such activities as consum
ers' interest, salvage, recreation,
war savings, education, health,
nutrition, transportation and
other types of community war
activity carried on with the ap
proval of the state defense
council.
The civilian defense auxiliary
group will include persons who,
because of their civil occupa
tions, should be eligible to be
on the streets and perform their
duties during blackouts and air
raids.
Special insignia will be pro
vided for members of each
group. The new units are in
addition to regular civilian de
fense activities.
Persons who may be Included
in the auxiliary group include:
Doctors, registered nurses.
members of the clergy, newspa
per reporters, press photograph
ers, news reel cameramen, oper
ators of essential transportation
facilities, telegraph messengers,
telephone and telegraph oper
ators, representatives of humane
societies, and undertakers.
500 TO REGISTER
Salem, June 30. (IP) The
Salem Selective Service board
estimated that about 500 men
would register here today In the
draft registration for men 18-20
years old.
PHOENIX JUVENILES
TO MEET THURSDAY
Phoenix, June 30 (Spl)
Plans are being made to hold
the Juvenile meeting Thursday
at 7 p. m. Just prior to the
meeting of Neighbors' of Wood
craft Lodge. The meeting will
be held In the hall on the second
floor.
This plan will be tried to see
If the meeting of the two on
the same night, does not stim
ulate attendance in both.
NEED SOCIAL WORKERS
FOR PUBLIC WELFARE
Portland, June 30 IP) The
state public welfare commission
announced yesterday it was in
dire nVed of qualified social
workers, but refused to rein
state former county adminis
trator on the ground he was a
conscientious objector.
The commission rejected the
applicant, who said he objected
to military service because of
religious beliefs.
Rex Winburn, living In the
Rogue River district, charged
with driving an auto while in
toxicated, was sentenced to 30
days In the county Jail, fined
$100 and his liquor and oper
ator's license revoked for one
year, by Justice of the Peace W.
R. Coleman yesterday. Winburn
is held In the county Jail.
James Richardson his compan
ion, charged with disorderly
conduct, was fined $25 and costs.
According to the authorities,
Winburn created such a disturb
ance at his home, his wife and
clildren fled to the woods.
Later he was arrested on the
Pacific highway near Gold Hill.
William W. Alexander, also
charged with driving an auto
while intoxicated on the streets
of Medford, was today granted
until tomorrow afternoon, to
procure an attorney. He was re
leased on $250 bail.
Ray B. Shulcr, Central Point,
was assessed $1 for having no
operator's license; Wayne K.
Griffiths, Trail. $1.50 and costs
for an overload, and A. L. Fisch,
Medford, $1 and costs for no
operator's license.

CLOSE TWO DAYS
Three of Medford's large food
stores have signified their in
tentions of closing for the holi
day week-end. While other
Medford stores will likewise ob
serve the Fourth ot July by re
maining closed, the stores which
have already made a public an
nouncement are the Groceteria
Super Food markets, the Big
"Y" Super market and the Safe
way stores.
These retail grocery stores
will not only close Saturday,
the fourth, but will also close
their doors the following day so
that clerks may enjoy a good
rest and two week-end vacation
days. The management of the
stores have requested the co
operation of the public In doing
their shopping early for weekend.
U. S. ARMY IN ENGLAND
TO WELCOME YANKEES
London, June 30. (IP) The
United States army will absorb
100 of the Americans now in
the Canadian army In a mass
ceremony tomorrow "some
where in England. The transfer
will be at the men's own request
in accordance with a Canadian
American agreement.

Started In Orchards
Summer use of Irrigation
water has started In the Medford
irrigation district, Manager ta
N. Judd reported today. Out
side of especial care to prevent
waste, there will be no set regu
lations, due to the varying soil
of the valley. A heavy use cf
water is now underway, princi
pally in orchards. Manager Judd
said picking of pears U expected
to start around August 15, due
to the season being about three)
weeks late, for all crops.
The Ruhr mines produce
