extinguish a roof fire at the Er

damage was reported. A flue
fire at the home of Mrs. B. L.

partment reported today.
WELDING GLASSES
BEING EXPANDED;
ON 24-HOUR BASIS
With the formation of three
new welding classes instruction
in the defense welding classes is
being offered 24 hours a day In
Wedford. Five classes are a I
ready in progress but a call for
additional welders has been is
sued by the shipyards and men
ana women are being given em
ployment at beginning wages of
$1.20 an hour E, H, Hedrick,
head of the defense class pro
gram in Jackson county said today.
Completion of the class in
struction takes from 150 to 250
hours depending on aptitude of
the student. Hedrick explained
that some are being taken by
the shipyards with less than the
required time if recommended,
by the instructor. Day classes, i
especially, are open to the
women, with men being given
preference In the early evening
shifts. ,
New classes will start as soon 1
s students are enrolled which 1
will be in about two days. Regis-;
tration may be mads at the city
school superintendent s office or
by telephoning the office be-;
tween 8 a. m. and 12 noon or'
and S p. m. Word has been
received from the shipyards that
women welders are "doing a suc
cessful Job."
