Cited To Court Lilllam May
Thompson of Rogue River,
charged with driving an auto
mobile without an operator's
license, was cited to appear in
Justice court July 2, by state
police. Larry Marsh of Medford
and Herbert G. Mires of Phoe
nix, each were cited to appear
in Justice court June 30 for
operating automobiles without
mufflers.
Two Fires The city fire de
partment answered a call at the
' Hotel Jackson at 10:33 p. m.
Sunday to extinguish a small
blaze evidently caused by a
cigarette which was dropped in
a waste basket in the ladies'
rest room. Little damage was
reported. A cigarette dropped
at the shooting gallery at 21
South Riverside avenue resulted
in a minor blaze about 11:50
p. m. Sunday, No damage was
reported.

IN FIRE FIGHTING
Two groups of voluntary civ
ilian firefighters, under direc
tion of Rogue River National
Forest officials, spent several
hours in the woods yesterday re
ceiving practical experience In
extinguishing fires. The volun
tary fighters are to be called in
case serious emergencies arise
this summer.
Organized by Bill Llngaas, of
fice manager and Harry Dow
son, sales manager a crew of 19
millworkers of Medford Corpor
ation was taken in a forest serv
ice truck to Four-Bit creek in
the Butte Falls district. The
mill-workers, making the trip on
their own time, were trained in
constructing a fire line and In
putting out an actual fire by
Maurice Tedrow, Rogue River
National Forest fire assistant.
Foreman of the volunteer crew
is C. H. Shritt.
The other volunteer group,
composed of members of the
Rot;ue River Sportsmen's club,
traveled to the Little Applegate
forest camp where Lee Port of
the Star ranger station and a
group of trained fire-fighters
demonstrated the 10-man "one
lick" method of fire fighting, de
veloped and perfected by Ran
ger McReynolds under supervi
sion of Karl Janouch, Rogue
River National Forest super
visor, and Port.
Accompanying this volunteer
group were Janouch and H. P.
Gaylor, assistant supervisor of
the Grand Mesa National Forest
in Coladado, here on a special
fire control assignment.
The Rogue River Sportsmen's
club plans to enlist a consider
able number of sportsmen as
volunteer fire-fighters to assist
the regular fire-fighting crews
should a critical situation occur.
Sportsmen desiring to volunteer
may obtain application blanks
at the forest service office in
the federal building or at Lam
port's. GIVEN $100 FINE
Kermit Mansfield of Ashland,
charged with operating an auto
mobile while under the Influ
ence of intoxicating liquor, was
fined $100 In the c'ty police
court this morning and his driv
er's license was revoked for a
year.
Mansfield was arrested Sun
day after his automobile which
he was driving on South Front
street turned into West Main
street and sideswiped the auto
mobile being operated by Will
iam Root of Central Point.

county will be closed between J

taled 450,039 pounds.
CMC employes at Camp
White have collected over 4,000
pounds of scrap rubber at the
camp and today were to turn
the check it brought over to the
local USO.

President Roosevelt extended
the rubber collection drive to
day for an additional ten days
because collections through Sat
urday had brought in a disap
pointing total of 219,000 tons.
Originally scheduled to have
ended at midnight tomorrow,
the campaign now will continue
through July 10.

conscientious objector's camp in
Oregon to Join the merchant ma
rine, was today ordered re
moved to Portland for trial.
U. S. Commissioner Francis

moval, fixed bail at $1,500.
Clawson was charged with fail
ing to return to the civilian pub
lic service camp 21 at Cascade
Locks after being granted leave
last Dec. 22.
