Remodeling of Houses to
Provide For More Family
Units is Urged.
The flood of inquiries pouring
In to the Jackson County Cham
ber of Commerce from officers
and civilian personnel connected
with the new Medford canton
ment here indicate an acute
shortage of houses and family
unit apartments will soon be felt
locally. The imminent need of
housing facilities has prompted
an immediate effort to provide
accommodations for the many
i families soon to arrive in this
city.
In discussion the housing situ
ation faced by this community,
chamber of commerce officials
point out that the chance of
financing new home construc-
. tion by the government or by
private capital is remote as far
as a general building program
is concerned. The approximate
increase in families is known at
this time and the anticipated
demand for housing will make
necessary the immediate remod
eling of houses already con
structed to provide one or more
added family units.
Funds Available
While FHA funds will not be
available for new construction,
money will be available for this
rehabilitation of existing houses,
i according to information receiv-
' d here. To further encourage
the establishment of added fam
ily units in houses already
erected here, the restrictions on
critical building materials will
be relaxed.
Post-war surveys In other can
tonment centers revealed the
need for furnished rooms in
military areas. Since Pearl Har

chamber of commerce officials

fect this community when

most instances, be married men

tion on the Medford airport will
render the situation here even
more critical.
As a service to home owners
here and in an effort to fully
cooperate with Camp White offi
cials, the Jackson County Cham
ber of Commerce has offered it:

seekers. Those who have houses
in this city adapted to conver
sion to family units are asked
to contact the chamber or any
of Medford's lumber dealers so
that needed remodeling may be
undertaken without delay. An
expert will immediately call
and offer reliable information as
to approximate cost of convert
ing house into two or more
family units.

Many war bonds and stamps
have been sold during the past
two weeks by a corps of volun
teer workers in the theatres each
night and Saturdays at the banks
and public booths located on the
Medford streets and in the busi
ness establishments. Mrs. Ted
Hornecker heads the Volunteer
Women's Bond Sales corps.

BOY-GIRLS' CAMP
PLAN TAKE SHAPE
With the weather giving every
Indication of falling Into its nor
mal groove, plans are rapidly
being fulfilled for the annual
Salvation Army Summer Camp
for Boys and Girls at Lake O
The Woods.
Last year the Salvation Army
Summer camp was held at the
Boy Scout camp. However, this
year, by the co-operation of the
Rogue River National Forest
the camp will be held at the CCC
camp on the east side of the
lake. The entire facilities of
the CCC camp have been turned
over for the Salvation Army
New buildings have been erect
ed, roads have been cleared, and
everything is being placed In
readiness for the needy young
sters of this community. A squad
of CCC boys has been spending
the past several days at the
campgrounds, working under the
supervision of Adjutant Chas.
Cox.
In taking over the entire
camp, innumerable difficulties
have ensued. Most of them have
already been surmounted but
there still remains a lack of
equipment to thoroughly equip
the camp. Kerosene lanterns,
and lamps, mattresses (three
quarters or full size), folding
cots, quilts, blankets, towels,
pillows and pillow cases are all
needed.
Also needed Is sick room
equipment for emergencies:
first aid kits, small tables, etc.
Mirrors .wash pans, buckets,
wash boards and, if posible, an
electric washing machine are
among other items that can be
used.
Pots, pans, kettles, frying
pans, skillets, biscuit pans, roll
ing pins, paring and butcher
knives, graters, meat saw, cleav
ers and kitchen items of that
nature can all be used.
Playground equipment such
as balls, bats, gloves, mitts,
footballs, tennis balls and nets,
swings, ping pong tables and
rackets are needed for recre
ational activities. And such items
as axes, rakes, hoes, saws, ham
mers, table vice, chisels, augers
and bits would be welcomed to
help keep the buildings In re
pair. Those wishing to contribute
any of the above articles to
help furnish the camp are re
quested to bring the articles to
the Salvation Army hall at 4th
and Bartlett streets or, if that
Is Impossible, to call Adjutant
Cox at 4230.
It has also been requested
that youngsters, or parents with
youngsters wishing to attend
the Summer camp this year, reg
ister their names at the office
of the Salvation Army hall be

Southern Oregon residents

opening of the United Service
Organization temporary center,
at 234 East Main street, today
between 4 and 10 p. m. De
signed as a recreational center
for men in the U. S. armed
forces, the quarters have been
remodeled to offer a program of
interest to soldiers stationed in
the county.
Mrs. Helen Small, USO direc
tor, said the public is invited
to become acquainted with the
center and the program and to
learn how they can participate
in the program. She invites
those unable to attend Sunday
to stop at the center during the
coming week.
Attendance Is expected to in
dude a large number and If
residents are unable to secure
admittance at one time it is
hoped they will call later in the
day.
Under direction of Mrs. Pen
ny Fontaine, USO director, a
varied program of Interest to
young and old has been ar
anged. Refreshments will be
served from the canteen, decor
ated in gay South American fa
shion.
The program for the military
men begins Monday at 9 a. m.
running until 11 p. m. dally.
