Dr. William J. Hale, head of a
Chemurgy firm, testified before
house mining aub-committee
today he could produce all the
rubber the nation needs in a
year if given $100,000,000, men
and priorities.
Xhe former organic professor
at the University of Michigan,
now consultant to . the Dow
Chemical company and preii
dent of the National Agrol com
pany, Washington, said he would
set up about 100 plants with
two in each state each turning
out 43,000 pounds of butadiene
daily from certain types oi corn.
Another S130.000.000 would
be required by the rubber in
dustry to make the rubber from
the butadiene, he said, adding
that his synthetic product would
make tires superior to those
now in use.
' "We can produce rubber for
probably 3 cents a pound," he
asserted, from waxey maize and
grain sorghums, and you can al
ways make it cheaper as you
progress. It can be made in
enormous quantities at a very
email cost and not even disturb
the surplus corn crop.

bushels of corn will produce all
the rubber we can possibly use
and that's not five per cent of
our crop."

feats that could be performed
by Chemurgy.

velt and Donald Nelson, War
Production board chairman. Dr.
Hale accused the WPB organiza
tion of "not wanting to win the
war." He said WPB officials
were "hamstrung by steel and
oil industries" which he said
were in effect "Hitler cohorts."
.. Dr. Hale said that the petro
leum industry' received 300 mil
lion dollars with which to make
synthetic rubber, but that it
could not hope to make more
than 23,000 tons in a year, and
that no rubber as yet had been
produced.
840,000 CASES COTS
IS GOVERNMENT NEED

The agriculture department to
day asked canners to submit of
fers for 840,000 cases of solid
pack canned apricots for lend
lease shipment.
The department said it would
pay $8 per dozen for NO. 10
size cans of U. S. grade F-solld
pack pie apricots provided the
canners agreed to pay growers
at least $70 a ton for the fresh
fruit delivered at the cannery.

Income Tax Repeal
To Be Voted On In
California in Fall

(JP) The proposed initiative for
repeal of the state Income tax
was qualified today by the filing
of petitions carrying 213,070
verified signatures. Only 212,117
names were needed.

extensive campaign will be
launched "on behalf of the re
pealer, with representatives of
labor, agriculture, industry and
virtually every branch of the
