Canning Sugar Application
Instructions Are Provided
For the benefit of local residents making application for
canning sugar the ration board in the Sparta building has
provided the following instructions for filling out canning
sugar applications.

offers a recreational gathering
place for men In the armed
service and the program is be

The rumpus room, which has
been gaily decorated with Span'
ish murals by Philip Henselman,
, has been named "Los Bareelll
tos," meaning "Little Barrels."
Assisting with the art work are
Mignon Phipps, Joan and Alison
Aya, Alice Day, Wanda Burch
and Margaret Ann Brown.
The center Is furnished with
lounging chairs, reading facili
ties and the canteen Is nearly
completed with the exception of
a small Ice box. The house
furnishings committee have been
in charge of the furniture.

Jar that will be placed In' the
canteen and the following ladies
are baking cookies for the open

Senior hostesses will hold
their second meeting at the
center today at 7:30 p. m. All
interested are invited to attend
and volunteer for the following
committees: senior hostess, house
furnishing. Information, switch
board, program, publicity, li
brary and transportation. Chair
men of the various committees
will be on hand to explain
duties for the volunteers.
The Gem Cottage Is exhibit
ing a display of agates at the
center hoping to encourage this
hobby among the service men.

Exempted from the new regu
lations were professional serv
ices, such as those performed by
physicians, dentists, lawyers and
barbers.
Home canning applicants are
asked to leave lines one and two
blank as they have no bearing
on canning for home use. Lines
three and four should have the
nama and address of the fam
ily unit (regardless of tha num
ber of people In the family).
Line five should contain the
amount of sugar for which the
application is made. This line
will be separate from the Jams,
Jellies, etc.
Line six should contain the
amount of sugar on hand at the
time the canning application is
made out. Section or line seven
should contain the serial numoer
of war ration book one together
er with names of members of
the family unit. Also in section
seven the applicant should
make notation of the amount of
fruit canned last year (separ
ate and apart from Jams, Jel
lies, etc) and the amount they
intend to can this year.
If war ration books were not
issued (due to an excess amount
of sugar on hand at time of
consumer registration) tha appll
cant will state how many are
In tha family unit.
The form must be signed by
the applicant and dated after
which it will be submitted to
the local board for approval
and certificates made out. One
week must be allowed in order
to get certificates ready for the
purpose of canning sugar. The
application must be filled out In
duplicate.
HOSE FOR 1942

Women's stocking needs for the
rest of 1942 can be supplied, Al
fred Hoffman, first vice presi
dent of the American Federation
of Hosiery Workers, said today.
Hoffman said 32,000,000 dozen
pairs of rayon-and-cotton stock
ings would be on the market -this
year against 44,000,000 dozen In
1S40. Mens hosiery would be
ample, he added.
Shoe production In May was
39,000,000 pairs, 6.8 per cent be

Carl Sumner Knopf, 52, presi
dent of Willamette university
since last September, died at his
home here yesterday of a heart
attack. He had been In 111
health for several months.
Dr. Knopf, who came here
from the University of Southern
California, where he had been
dean of the school of religion
resigned the presidency on May
29, effective next September 1
His resignation was tendered af
ter charges by the Salem post
of the American Legion that he
sought to register for selective
service as a conscientious objector.
