keeps one civilian trait ne still
likes to see his name in print.
Four hundred Army news
papers ranging from typewrit
ten handbills to ambitious Jour
nals edited by ex-professionals
are keeping Pvt. Anybody
and his 2,000.000 comrades post
ed on the goings-on In their mil
itary "home towns."
Morale officers say the camp
newspapers are doing a whale
of a Job keeping the soldiery
perked up. A rookie begins to
throw off his Initial homesick
ness when he begins to read
about his own company or his
1 own regiment. Then he's part
of something real. It's like see
ing the name of his old firm or
his old college.
From then on, they're regular
readers of the csmp paper, and
better soldiers. There's a
squawk If any outfit is missed in
distribution of the sheet.
Putting out a camp news
paper is a Job to make a civilian
publisher go quietly nuts. The
ordinary problems of publishing
are multiplied manyfold. The
Fort Meade "Post" is a typical
camp paper, under the supervi
sion of Ma J. Francis E. Lutz.
Here are some of the prob
lems Ma). Lutz recalls the
"Post" has had to take in stride.
I First, the old "who, what,
where, when" basis of Journal
ism must be revised and pruned
; "Who" and "what" are all right
sometimes, but "where" and
"when" are out most of the
time. Pvt. Anybody might send
a copy of the camp paper home,
and proud Ma Anybody would
probably show it to Mrs. Back
fence, who'd tell it to her bridge
club. That means the where
abouts of the Upteenth division
; on such-and-such a date could
' become common talk In Berlin
Getting news from the brass
hats Is tougher in tu. Army, too
In civilian life, a reporter can
sit on the edge of the mayor's
desk and say, in effect, "Listen,
Fatty, what gives?" Corporal
Reporter can't do that to a camp
"mayor," in all probability a
major general who's more than
somewhat touchy about his
rank.
' The staffs of most comp news
papers are enlisted men, with
oficers in very remote control.
They operate on the wise as
sumption that men in the ranks
can write the stuff that other
men in the ranks want to read.
On the "Post," there are four
enlisted man reporters, who ro
tate as managing editors, and a
photographer.
They're "leg men" In a very
real sense. The Army doesn't
furnish cars or taxis for soldier
reporters. They hoof from one
end of the cantonment to the
other. Even during maneuvers
in the field, when they perform
ed regular duties the "Post"
staff didn't miss an edition hut
they had to commandeer a
hearse to rush It 300 miles for
distribution once.
Keeping a staff together Is
one of the tough problems of
army publishing. The "Post"
has graduated half a doren to
officer training schools. Others
get sudden orders to move to
that "where" that can't be men
tioned. Picture the dilemma of
a managing editor, Just before
press time, with half his staff
ordered one way and most of
his subscribers entraining an
other. "X" Division originally was
stationed at Fort Meade. It's
gone "somewhere" for advanced
training. However, the "Post"
still remains Its "home town"
newspaper, and goes to the men
regularly every week. "Y" Di
vision is training at Meade now.

for its "alumni" group and its
"undergraduates" stiU In train
ing there.
The ' number of papers sent
home zooms up when promotion
lists are printed. That's when
the most names appear. Pvt.
Anybody is Just like everybody
else he gets a kick out of see
ing hi name in the paper, and
wants his folks to see it too.
