WELDING CLASS
OPEN FOR WOMEN

open to 15 women according to
announcement today by E. H.
Hedrick, city school superin
tendent The call has been Is
sued for IS women to ba trained
within the next three months
for welding in shipyards.
Among requirements are good
health, able to stand heavy
work, be 18 to 50 years of age.
Women Interested are asked to
register immediately at the city
school superintendent's office in
the city hall.
. Women will be referred to
the day classes which men can
not fill due to employment.
The classes meet six days a
week at the high school from
6:15 until 8:30 a. m. or 2:30 un
til 8:45 p. m. Instructors are
Ed Learning and Van Calder.
Hedrick said there is an increas
ing need for women in defense
activities.

Remodeling operations which
doubled the floor and shelf
space were completed this week
at the Peerless Grocery, located
with the Peerless Meat Market
on North Bartlett street.
The additional space enables
them to display a complete stock
of groceries and produce, ac
cording to Sam Bateman, man
ager of the grocery department.
The extra room was gained
by removing a wall and opening
up the room next door formerly
occupied by a restaurant. The
new, convenient checking coun
ter Is now iocateri in the center
of the store.
The event Is being celebrated
with a special weekend sale and
cake and coffee will be served
free all day Saturday.
