chapter in the stirring story of
last month's Coral sea battle
was unfolded today by Ameri
can land-based army fliers who
told how they delivered the first
of a series of blows that sank
IS Japanese ships, set more
than 20 afire and sent the scat
tered remnants of a great inva
sion armada fleeing northward.
For four solid days, the fliers
disclosed, they ranged the sea
in relays, striking at the Jap
anese fleet and returning to
their bases only for fresh loads
of bombs and gasoline.
Over Wide Rang.
In adding new details to the
accounts already given from
naval and other quarters, the
fliers said the action was fought
out over a wide area, with the
rival surface squadrons at least
200 miles apart, probably a rec
ord range for a naval engage
ment, and with the aerial miss
iles entirely replacing fleet
broadsides for the first time in
history.
Had the Japanese failed to
turn back, declared Capt. Harry
Spieth of Portland, Ore., not one
of the 70 to 80 vessels which
originally composed the armada
would have survived.
Credit for striking the Initial
blow against the Japanese fleet
was given to Lieutenants Maur
ice Hargan of Joplin, Mo., and
Willis B. Campbell of Chicago,
pilots of a plane which sank a
large transport in a harbor
where the enemy was massing
for the Coral sea thrust.
It was Capt. John Roberts of
Beebe, Ark., however, who was
credited with spotting the main
Japanese fleet after it took off
while he was flying ahead of a
Coral sea patrol formation.
"Roberts sighted the Japan
ese ships 15 minutes before we
did," declared Capt. Spieth,
leader of the formation.

"He was pretty excited as he
radioed back the information
that a big force, Including an
aircraft carrier, was dead
ahead.
"When we arrived they were
sitting pretty 20,000 feet below
us. There was one aircraft car
rier, a seaplane tender, several
cruisers and a number of de
stroyers. A way off we could
see another large convoy.
"We came in right behind
Roberts and let them have all
we had. We scored near misses
and a direct hit. One of the
cruisers which erupted smoke
started to blaze furiously.
"As our bombs dropped, the
Japanese aircraft carrier did a
180-degree turn. He really was
trying to escape . . . and so were
the others.
"Their wakes looked like
wriggling white worms as they
lurnea in an directions as if a
hen was over them trying to
pick tnem up.
"Those Japs threw every
thing they had at us. They were
rocking our plane lm a feather.
"Soon our naval dive bomb
ers appeared and let the carrier
we learned later it was the
Ryukaku have it. They sank
her in five minutes with 15
bombs and 10 torpedo hits.
Fled To Rendeivou.
"On our way back to bomb
up (load more bombs) we saw
most of the rest of their convoy
coming in pairs or threes in a
loose string formation. We
sighted about 25 ships in that

"On our way out again we
saw part of our fleet coming to
ward the Japanese fleet, then
200 miles away.
"That was the last time I saw
the Japanese going southward.
They lost heart when they lost
their carriers, and they were
easy meat without aircraft pro
tection. We got two transports
this time with direct hits.
"The next day we went out
again. The main units of the
Japanese navy had disappeared.
leaving the transports to fend
for themselves.
"We continued to bomb the
stragglers. During that day
there wasn't five square miles
of ocean we traversed that
didn't have a Japanese ship of
some kind streaking northward

PROTEST PAYMENT
Salem, June 19 UP) The
Woodard Lumber company of
Lane county filed suit in circuit
court here yesterday protesting
against unemployment compel

against the company during the
period from August 21 to De
cember 28, 1940. when the com
pany was shut down.
Agriculture is one of the most
hazardous Industries. More
farmers were killed by accl
dents last year than construc
tion workers, miners or factory
workers. '
An estimated 15 recruits from
Jackson county will participate
in the celebration and parade to
be held in Portland June 25,
marking an all-time record in
enlistments for the U. S. navy
for the fiscal year. Plans for
the celebration have been an
nounced by Lieut. Commander
G. F. DeGrave, in charge of
Oregon navy recruiting head
quarters, who said it is hoped
that Oregon's record will reach
9,000 enlistments.
It was explained by Jack M.
Carpenter, CEM, Medford navy
recruiter, that each recruiting
sub-station throughout the state
will accompany their men to
Portland. Enlistees from Med
ford will be announced later.
War Bond Aid Asked
Lieut. Commander DeGrave
has asked support of all chair
men of war bond committees
for the sale of enough bonds to
figuratively outfit Oregon's en
listees with their initial equip
ment. Carpenter stated that
about $7,862 in bond sales
would cover the cost of equip
ment and transportation to San
Diego of men taking part in the
event, who enlisted in Medford.
William Gates, Jackson coun
ty chairman of war bond sales,
has promised the navy recruit
ing service that an extra effort
will be made to sell additional
bonds over the regular county
quota to pay the expenses oi
these new recruits. Not only
that, Mr. Gates said, "but
enough also to pay the expense
of the group who took the
pledge to the navy on June 7
at Jackson county Victory cen
ter." Mean. Extra Buying
Mr. Gates explained that thl:
means an extra purchase of at
least $20,000 of bonds should be
sold in the next few days. He
said "no finer tribute to these
young men could be given than
when purchasing these exira
bonds at your bank or post, of
fice to state that your purchase
is a tribute to these young men."
All men who enlist prior to
June 25 will be returned home
until that date so they may par
ticipate in the celebration and
parade.
